H has asked for a BMX for his 9th birthday.

What’s good in the BMX world?
Do the £300-jobs on t’internet offer anything over the £150 Voodoo Zaka?
If so, which one for a bit of street and riding to his friends.
(He has access to a blinged MTB for proper riding – in which he shows no interest).

    Cheers!

Is he big for 9 years old? An 18″ bmx might be more suited to his size

    +1 don’t get a 20″ they’re generally too big for little uns
my 11yr old and 9 yr old are both still fine on 18″ bikes, and will be for some time to come, think of how big a 20″ is on an adult then replicate that size for your kid. theyll find it much easier to get to grips with if its the right size, source bmx have some good choices.
mine have a wtp trust and a kink kicker both pretty impressive for the money.

Top tip – hadn’t thought about 18″. Thanks!

    This has grabbed H’s attention:

    Scrap that – crap reputation.

one thing i learnt as a young ‘un on bmx, is that as a young ‘un, most “Proper” bmx’s were too heavy to do any tricks on. My old found in the canal burner was light and I could really through it around. When i traded up to a Powerlight PFS2, it was too heavy, i could barely hop it and found jumping much harder.

its not cool, but an 18 inch wheel’d race bmx will be more usable

See if you can find a Social Scout 18″, probably second hand only now.

This looks like my son’s old one, we sold it to someone in Dursley and now appears for sale again:
