My son is looking for a new BMX bike and has managed to scrape together around £245. He's asked me to do some research for him but to be quite honest I don't really know what's good, bad or ugly in the BMX world. Would anyone have any recommendations for good quality, well-spec'd bikes for his budget that he won't outgrow, skill-wise, in the short-term? He has had a BMX for a while and is beyond entry level now. Any links to any good deals on the web/LBS would be gratefully received.

would be a very good buy. good brand, decent spec, will be more than good enough for years to come! Free helmet too!

Specs are very similar on each but PRK – Skatepark, STR – Street, TRL – Trails/Dirt, not much bearing on these as the top tubes are all same length and components pretty much the same (the TRL doesn't even have dirt tyres for example) but worth noting that the TRL ones are lighter which might be a good point for a kid.

Have a look on ebay, I got an awesome deal on a street/park bmx for £150. All the parts were decent – odyssey, sunday, primo etc. Just needed a brake setup which cost an extra £30 or so.

Check out the forums on http://www.bikeguide.org or http://www.streetphire.co.uk, usually some good deals to be had there.

If you want to buy new, WeThePeople complete bikes are usually very good and they come in some great colours! If he wants to use brakes (probably not knowing the way most bmxers are!), try to get something with chrome rims as they stop a lot better than any other surface.
