  • Bizarre car question – A6 v Golf R?

At 2011 the c350cdi Merc should be the newer V6 diesel with lower emissions / more bhp (265bhp) / better gearbox. A pretty underrated car. They seem very reliable too (better than the previous 231bhp engine).

Get the A6. The Golf R is a decent car but it’s no street going race car. It doesn’t have the space/practicality of the A6 or the performance of an M135i. The mrs has the 3.0 supercharged A6 and it goes well but unfortunately like most VAG cars understeers like a complete barge so I wouldn’t ever consider a VAG car bar the R8 as my go to “fun” car.

My neighbour owns a Volkswagen dealership so I have driven pretty much all of them. From what I’ve seen the “R” badge isn’t exactly sacred, he had a touran with an R badge which was a 2.0 TDI?

I won’t deny I’m a BMW man but the A6 as a mode of transport is a very nice place to be and the more performance orientated engines are tractable (diesels are banned in my household so can only speak for the petrols :P) so yes go for the A6.

That would be “R-line”, which is more a level of equipment than performance. In the same way an Audi A6 S-Line is not an S6. The only actual ‘R’ cars are the Golf and Scirocco, and limited numbers of LHD Polo R WRCs.

I looked at the a6 when I bought my last car, nice car but just felt huge so of the two I’d go for the golf.

I’d get the Audi, but going fast isn’t really a priority to me any more.
I’m sure the novelty of out gunning most other cars on the road starts to wane eventually.

But the OP is a relatively new driver so I guess he’s still got that phase to go through. But I’m with you and wouldn’t have either.

Ok well that makes sense. However I don’t really see how the golf is not much more than a tuned GTI? I admit I haven’t looked into the exact specs but definitely driving it when you get to anything above 7/10ths the front end starts wandering and the engine gets wheezy at the top end.

I’m not in the market for a hot hatch but can’t see why anyone would consider the Golf R over an M135i unless you had a real affinity for the “golf” brand.

Maybe because the 1 Series has looks only a mother could love. It’s slightly less hideous since the facelift, but still hideous.

Well, yes, that’s exactly what it is. That’s how cars work when there are different models in a range. The GTI is just a tuned version of the 1.4 TSI one too.

An RS6 is just a tuned S6, which is just a tuned A6, and an M135i, is just a tuned 116i. Clever innit?

Quite different specification. Golf doesn’t suffer same image problems (if that’s important to you) golf not as ugly (again if that’s important to you).

Not sure you can compare a 1 series and a Golf, unless the latest version of the 1 series is a lot bigger than the previous one.
The 1 series is tiny inside, with a small boot and very little rear passenger space. God knows how they achieved it, as it’s not that small outside.

Wow that is clever! So my 550i is a detuned M5? Unfortunately that would also make my M3 a tuned 335i? I’ll just go buy a 320d and put an M3 badge on it to cover all the bases!

You know what I meant, all the reviews seem to state that the Golf R has new pistons and a slightly better flowing head for it to rev better. At least the M135i has the N55 which is unique to the X35i’s.

I’m assuming anyone who spends 30k on a golf also looks at the alternatives (apart from everything else in the VAG group) A45 AMG is on another bracket price wise but the 135i can be had with very good discount especially for cash and lease.

Looks are subjective, there is no comparison on performance and driver reward.

Except there is. Otherwise no one would buy the Golf. We know you like the BMW, but it’s not as clear cut as it’s being better…

I’m going to file this with the comment I read on here a few months ago from some bloke which went something along the lines of ‘Honda have really good ideas and implement them really really badly.’ 🙄
