Taking the bike out into the woods on Friday. I have a bivvy bag, sleeping bag, food (probably) and other sundries in a small rucksack, and will strap the self-inflating roll mat and tine beach shelter in case of rain to the bike.

As I’ll be sitting round a massive fire for a few hours talking bollocks with friends, what is the best alcohol to take?

I’m partial to both beer, lager and stupidly strong Weston’s cider, but also Cuba Libre. I feel lager/beer will be too heavy to get a decent amount to the woods, as will a few litres of Coke Zero to dilute the rum.

I’m not a wine person, so a bag of cheapo plonk is out.

What to the seasoned bikepackaholics suggest?

Not a help but I like to take wine personally.

Spirits go too fast an give me a hangover. Beer is too wet.

Not lighting a massive fire in the woods is my suggestion.

    Bottle of mescal

    Whisky for bikepacking.

    Rum for boatpacking.

WTF is the Coke for- are you a girl?

I hear drugs are very light and compact, ideal for this sort of thing.

    Have you considered drugs?

The problem with beer is that it gets a bit <ahem>lively</ahem> after bouncing around on the bike 😛

Whisky for me but wine is fine 😉

    Genuine LOL.

Port would be my suggestion, but then there are few occasions that Port is not suitable in my experience.

Nice Sherry or Madeira. Like a drink and dessert combined.

If you’re only going ‘out in the woods’ head there before and stash yer beer. If you must carry it, there’s loads of 330ml cans of craft IPA in the supermarkets now.

For social drinking around a fire – Stag’s Breath honey liqueur is very nice:

Cheers for the suggestions. The massive fire will be a charcoal kiln or what ever they are called.

    Pre-stashing is a good plan.

Drugs are bad, m’kay. And I don’t know anyone that could help in that department.

Edit: White cider is out – bad experiences in my long-distant youth. Likewise tequila.

Ooh, Bez just reminded me – Calvados.

Also (at the other end of the beverage sophistication spectrum) we used to make flavoured vodkas; it’s easy, just get a bottle of vodka and chuck stuff in it and leave it a few days.

Haribo, chillies, boiled sweets, limes, whatever, just try stuff. One particularly fine vintage was “Bez’s Poop Soup”: grated dark chocolate and Fox’s glacier mints. Looked like diarrhoea, tasted like After Eights. Mmmm.

For our S24O mini-adventures I have a Grappa hip-flask, and herself a Calvados hip-flask. But if you can keep things chilled, then a bottle of very pale Provence rose works as well.

Gin and Juice in a folding bottle/platypus thing.

Apple and raspberry, grapefruit, orange and grapefruit all good.

You can take some indo with you as well.

Usually whisky. Sometimes if I don’t want something so strong (my hipflask is massive) I put whisky mac in it

Wine decanted in a plastic bottle for the first night, whisky for the second. I carry mine in Alpkit stemcells round the handlebars.

Whatever you take, make sure you take some empty plastic foldflat bottle things.

Last water stop fill them all.

There is nothing worse than waking up with a hangover and you’ve run out of water.

Sainsburys do a value wine that comes in a plastic bottle. For anyone looking to save a bit of weight ditch/drink the wine and decant your preferred wine into it.

    Pirates do not take mixers!

I even invented rum porridge on one bikepacking trip

Wine is the best weight/alcohol compromise but how about cheap sherry?

Why not nice sherry? Pack in a good Fino. You might be onto something there.

Port was my last chosen tipple and rather enjoyed it!

If you’re being sociable then you get wine ‘miniatures’ from various supermarkets in plastic bottles (red obvs).

If you’re out to get pissed then whisky (more alkyhaul per ml) and decant into a plastic bottle (Tesco tonic water may come in handy sized plastic bottles that would do the job quite nicely I think….). I’d recommend Bells or perhaps Whyte & Mackies…. 😉

    how long’s the ride there?
3 Stellas wouldn’t be that heavy. Take 3 Stellas.

40 minute ride – not far, really. I Might just hoy a 4-pack of Red Stripe in the back pack and ride home afterwards.

Whisky, perhaps a bourbon. If you want to be fancy, take a tiny measure of Angostura bitters (the soy sauce containers from supermarket sushi work) and some sugar to make Old Fashioneds

Micro bottles of champers, white, red, desert, port, whisky and a final cleansing ale.

A poxy 40 minute ride & your’e asking what to take???

Me & some mates from work did a Camban bothy trip 2 years ago, I sensibly took 3 hipflasks with malt whisky in & my 3 mates took 8 cans of Stella. Each.
We rode in from Ratagan YH but called off at the Falls of Glomach 1st.

Mind you we were all so **** we left some behind when we left. 🙄
