I was recently in Portland, Oregon. A city that is adapting to the needs of cyclists a lot better than most.

Their cycle lanes are like no other. The cycle lane runs parallel to the kerb, then cars are parked to the outside of the lane, making a safe corridor for cyclists to ride in. In parts of downtown, prime car parking spaces are given over to bike parking. They have a good tram and bus network, but bikes are everywhere. The cars are getting squeezed out. I really only noticed how inconvenient the car was when, I'd boxed up my bike and got a car ride to the station.
