Bestest bike in the world for £1000?

My mate has finally decided to stump up0 the cash and upgrade his tank to a lighter ride, but he's not willing to spend more than £1000.

I know what I like, but I might be a bit blinkered in my suggestions. Above all he wants something lightweight, with a good long lasting spec. Probably a general XC weapon, perhaps up to 120mm travel.

He like the look of the Cannondale Flash with Headshock, i've also suggested an On-One Whippet SLX (£999) but they only have gash white in stock.

Any other suggestions folks? Is someone out there selling something to good to be true at this price point?

Mate has that FS boardman and for the money it's hard to beat.

Does he want/need an FS? Can get lighter and better spec if you go HT.

Might be worth checking out the current CRC sale too, some bargains up for grabs there.

He's happy to go hard tail, but FS is also an option.

I'll have a look at the Boardman for him, and the CRC sale.

I should have mentioned that he knows very little about brands/models.

he's going to look at the Boardman FS after work.
I think he's more keen on a hard tail though, lighter the better

On-One would be where I would head unless he wants an out and out XC machine, if so Boardman.

only real option at on-one is a Whippet with full SLX, but only available in white and with a fairly average fork.

otherwise they are pushing them out at £1400 to £1500 these days

I dont think an Inbred woul be light enough.

I think Merlin are doing some good offers on full 2012 Slx with wheels and Rebas....add a sale frame - Rock Lobster 853 or similar and some sale finishing kit for sub-1k.

Worth having a look at Paul's Cycles who have good deals on previous years models, e.g. 2009 Giant XTC1 for £799, 2010 GT Zaskar Elite for £699 and so on.

Specialized Pitch. I bought one for 400quid s/h and its just the best. Upgradable,versatile and because of that will grow with your riding. Just get one.

The Canyons poop all over Boardman for looks and equipment level.

If I was buying new, that's where my cash would be going. If I wasn't obsessed with getting a Yeti that is.

Can't fault my £800 quid Genesis Core 40, If you can get a Core 50 for under a grand, go for it i'd say!

For a HT - Cycle Surgery have Orange Pure7's for £850 down from £1k.

Now, I loved my clockwork and latter P7's, and I suspect that the Pure 7 will also be upto their usual standard.

Have you considered a whyte 901, totally biased but I love mine, so much so that I've flogged my full suss!

Quick google search and there coming up at around £950 for a 2011

Lot of bike for that IMO

I'd buy (I did buy) an ex-demo for less than half price - advantage is much cheaper, and you still get warranty. But s/h is a great way to get a cracking bike. New, I'd go Canyon then Bordman. But if you want a LBS then Canyon is out - no experience of Halfords as LBS however..... Many deals of 2011 spec bikes, and most of s won't notice the difference - and since you have your bike for more than a year, it'll be out of date someday anyway....

Tell him to get the Cannondale.

Good frame, reasonable components to get at least some riding in before upgrading.

The main selling point is the fork. For that price, nothing will touch a Headshok. For any price, nothing will be as light and rigid as a Headshok. Strong, crazy light, no flex, no striction, at least a year or two between services.

The lightness and ridigity of the fork and frame will flatter his riding, especially on the uphills.

Only downside is he may want to get a shorter stem and wider more upright bars sooner rather than later, unless he is a XC racer.

ebay and get a second hand one. There are loads out there and you will get a lot more bike for your money. I recently pickup at trek remedy 9 that was 2 years old (last of the 160mm ones) for under a grand.
