  • Best way to carry a DSLR?

Hello, got my first DSLR for Christmas and wondered what’s the best way of carrying it round?

I’m only using the kit lens at the moment, so don’t think I need a full on photography bag. Things like the LowePro cases don’t look too expensive, but I think I’d rather carry it in my messenger bag or rucsac if I’m walking round town etc.

Any suggestions for inconspicuous, light ways of carting it round?

I have endless camera bags but the most convenient (to me) way to carry it is wrapped in something inside my normal backpack. That could be a neoprene wrap thing, a padded insert taken out of one of the camera bags, a towel, a woolly hat, or whatever.

Depending on the size – Evoc do camera squares that work really well. I use the 3L one with a 18-55 lens and a spare 28mm with one Pentax body. Works well.

I use Lowepro sling bags – they are handy in that you can slip the bag over your shoulder and then slide it round to be in front of you when you want to open it up and get the camera out.

    This is the small version.

That’s the same one I have (except mine’s the 101 rather than the 102, the internal dividers are slightly different). It’s excellent if you’re out on some photography mission and specifically carrying a camera and not much else, but for those “oh, and I’ll take my camera” moments it’s a bit of a faff. In that sort of situation I’m more likely just to wrap it in a bar towel to stop it getting dinged and stuff it in a satchel-style bag along with all the other crap I haul around.

If I take mine out its usually in a normal bag. I bought a neoprene wrap for it which is neat and inconspicuous so works very well. Cheap on eBay too

Wraps or inserts look interesting, thanks for the suggestions so far

I have mine on a Q strap without a case, but some kind of case would be nice in case it rains.

Ive had a Lowepro Slingshot for a number of years.

A more simplified version of the Wolffepack thing shown above as it is designed to be carried on your back but you can then twist it round to the front.

If you already have a messenger bag, just get a padded insert. They are available in various sizes, so you can get something that fits your bag and camera. eg http://rigu.co.uk/camera-bags/padded-camera-bag-inserts
    Or plenty cheap on Ebay.

If you want to carry the camera ready to use, I recommend the Peak Design Capture clip. It attaches to the rucksack strap, then the camera just clips in. https://www.peakdesign.com/product/clips/capture/

I have a lowepro passport sling bag which I think is pretty good – the taller side is big enough to hold my tripod as well :

    tripod is only 0,8Kg :

the peak design leash strap is pretty good – if you attach one to the tripod mount then the camera falls nicely by your side with the lens downward :

For when you eventually need a bag for a variety of lenses, have a look at the Amazon basic ones, paid £20 for mine about 5 years ago, still going strong now.
I have also got a slingshot 100 that I spent more on but outgrew very quickly. I now only use it for holiday when I just take a kit lens or 2

(whilst looking for it to get the model number i just found its got a waterproof cover! Yey)

OK, ordered a cheap insert (also from mrsfry’s list) to get started, will have a look at the other options too – the Peak design stuff looks interesting.
