Going to need a new TV soon and looking to only spend around £600, the volume on the remote has stopped working on our current TV and her indoors isn’t keen on the retro volume adjustment. Anyhoo i don’t really keep up with TV tech so don’t really know what i should be looking at on my budget.
    Any advice appreciated.

    get a new remote?

This, remotes are pretty generic so even if you don’t get an original there are plenty of “generics” whatever you do don’t junk the tv for that, new remote and/or sell it

Please don’t go curved. It’s a stopgap gimmick whilst they are getting 4kHD market ready.

    @samunkim – I have a feeling this is true.

I think therevwill be a lot of deals on TVs in next few months ahead of the Olympics and Euro football

New remote, save up for an OLED.

It does seem a bit excessive to ditch the TV just because the remote is faulty!

But agree on avoiding curved. You’ll need to dig around the reviews but my advice is to concentrate on getting the best picture quality you can for the price. Ignore how “smart” the TV is as you can easily make it smart by adding a Firestick, Raspberry Pi, etc. Ditto sound – it’s always going to be rubbish from a flat panel and you’re best adding a sound bar later if needs be.

It’s not the remote it’s the infared on the TV that’s gone.
Thanks for the advice on curved that was in the running. On picture quality what am I looking for? Is 4k ultra HD the best just now.

    Argos are currently advertising Philips 4K UHD @ £295 for 43″, £349 for 49″.

my Samsung curved thing is 4kHD. it is very good, and the porn is fantastic on a 48” screen.

Don’t pay extra for curved, 4K or smart features. All a waste of money (we’ve discussed this at length previously.)

    Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung.

    All a waste of money

    mmm not so sure.
I bought my last tv in 2000. it died 3 week ago.
my new tv cost me £495. this was £499 cheaper than my big old Panasonic.

I may be wrong, but I consider that a bargain rather than a waste of money.

Confused, you said in the OP that the volume on the remote was broken. Then you say the IR on the TV but do the channels work?

Yeah i apologies my description sucked, my excuse is i was trying to get the wee one to sleep. Anyway it’s the infared on the TV i;m pretty sure as the Virgin remote volume doesn’t work anymore and original remote doesn’t do anything. I’ve checked by pointing the remote into my mobile camera and it’s still operating (you can’t see infared with just the naked eye)
Thanks for all the reply’s guy and sorry for my slow responds, 12 hour shifts and young family eat up all my time these days.
