  • Best place for hope pro 2 bearings – ebay??

Time has come to replace – standard pro 2 if that makes a difference.
Where do I get best quality bearings from at decent price?
Lots on ebay but don’t know if there is a difference between products or vendors.
    Anybody done this?

I wouldn’t get from ebay myself unless you are sure they are going to be aa top brand.

I would get them from a bearing specialist and go for something named – SKF, FAG or similar

RS or Buck and Hickman for example.

Again avoid ebay as it difficult to know often what you are buying. Not all bearing like everything else are created equal.

Bearing with grade 25 balls or better are a good idea for longevity.

I got some official Hope ones at the weekend assuming they’d be quality, and one of them is knackered out of the box. Delighted.

Anything with a decent amount of grease in them – grade 25 or grade 2500000000 bearings will die quickly once water gets in if there’s no grease.

Kaesae on here – he’s provided me with a few sets of bearings. Fast service and packs the bearings with his own formula of grease.

He also sells on Ebay as something like ‘airbourne’ based in Edinburgh.

Personelly i think if you ride through slop all year bearing are going to go rumbly no matter what make they are. I’ve not had a cheap bearing fail – cease to function or stop a ride. They will just run rough like an expense one will.
I’d by cheap, pack them with good grease and be prepared to change them again.

I use good quality bearings bought from a local engineering shop. I do not disturb the seals to regrease as I want the sealing as good as possible, they run for thousands of miles / years with no issues used all year round

Got some bearings from Kaesae/Katec for my front Pro 2 and have been great so far. They were only a couple of quid more than SKF or FAGs and they have that thicker grease packed in them, so seemed worthwhile.

what about “disturbing” the inner seals, which don’t really have any function?

That way you’d have more grease in the hub with the seals that matter undisturbed, everyone’s happy.

If not buying a designated Hope kit how can I tell that I have the correct dimensions?

In other words what do I have to ask for?

Found Airbourne on ebay – is that the right place for Kaesae?

    Yeah that’s the one – http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/airborne10101

The bearing number should be on the seal of the bearing I think.

bearing size is normally written on the out side circumference like the writing round a £1 coin.

I tried the cheaper bearings in hubs and pivots about 2.5 maybe 3 years ago and they didn’t last very long.

Looser tolerances and poor build quality = excellerated wear, I did have one of my bearings fail on a rear pro 2 after 12 months due to being ridden in horrendous weather conditions and all year long, one of this forums members was using them.

However the other 4x bearings were fine so we just replaced that one bearing, which for me makes sense.

What you have to understand about chromium bearings is that they will rust, the better the quality of material the slower it occurs, however even in my work shop with SKF FAG/INA or even standard bearings they will rust sitting on a workbench doing nothing.

If there is air in a bearing then you have the capacity for condensation when there are temperature fluctuations, if bearings will rust in a heated workshop then condensation will cause excellerated rust.

Also the grease in normal bearings is primarily a rotational grease at a 25% to 35% grease fill, it has almost no weather proofing qualities, you need a good water proof grease specific for bearings that will not harden too quickly, if the grease hardens you will end up with a siezed bearing.

I’m not an expert everything I know about bearings is from experience testing and just curiosity really.

Northwind what hubs were your bearings for? most of hopes bearings are SKF or INA/FAG except for the specialist size they run in the pro 3’s.

It was a Pro 2 front.

It should be an INA bearing although INA is more a distributor than manufacturer and they have several companies tham produce for them.

Do you still have the bearing? and where was it’s source?

    kaesae

Andyl on the top end SKF bearings and some of the others yes, but you should find the codes for a lot of bearings on the rubber seals.

For example 6001 2rs also can be called 61001 2rs,
the second number 6(1)001 determines the width of the bearing. Some MTB bearings are (3) width like 63800 2rs rather than 6800 or 61800 these 63800 bearings are 7mm wide rather than 4mm.

Kaesae, it has “HOPE” on the seals rather than a manufacturer name. (My own Pro 2s came with SKF originally, incidentally)

Hope only use INA bearings which are mostly custom made for them.

Another vote for 18bike. Not cheap ones, not expensive ones, just a nice middle ground at around £6 iirc. Service with a smile as always.

    .
    I was that bearing user.
It took some grief before it failed though.
    Fully recommend Kaesae’s bearings.
Iv,e got a full compliment of them on Trance X frame with no worries.
The one that failed was the outer bearing on a pro 2 free hub.
Front’s and all the other rears are still fine 12 months on. 😀

    Cheers for the mentions guys.

We stock the same bearings as Hope, so exactly as you’d see fitted to a new hub. SKF/INA in most cases. I’d not added front bearings to the shop site, so I’ve just sorted that this morning.

    Hey.

If it says hope on the seal then more likely than not those are INA bearings, hope’s contract is with INA, they supply the ceramic BB bearings and most other hope bearings, they will of course use other brands if INA is out of stock, INA also use a few different suppliers such as CW and EZO so might use SKF, as for spelling I’m too tired and busy to care 😉

Blazin saddles the custom bearings are for BB’s and the pro 3 also uses a custom size.

That search will throw up many threads were Kaesae has been nasty, insulting and states some dodgy ideas regarding how his bearings work. SKF/bearing supplier or 18bikes are the only serious options IMO.

Hello SV, do your arms not get tired, holding a grudge for this long ❓

The proof is in the pudding sunshine and my bearings are lasting for ages, yes I have a go at a lot of people, but it’s just good clean fun. The threads on this site are mostly just hand bag swinging and pointless arguments.

I am and always have been good natured, how long before you mention that kona video from youtube you always bring up?

You still don’t get it SV do you? I posted that at the same time as my bearing bearings bearings thread who thinks they know the score? knowing full well that idiots would pick up on it and go on about it.

I had no idea John Beckett from decent world would post the clip. But sometimes these things backfire a bit, still I can’t fault John he’s a top bloke.

I may be many things SV but I’m not petty and I don’t hold grudges for no good reason, a lot of people on STW who I’ve had a go at and who’ve had a go at me have asked for help, every one of them have received it.

I can sell a set of rear pro 2’s with my weather proofing for about £22 + £2.49 postage, not much for selling stuff on the forum so mostly I avoid doing it. But if you need bearings and want to try mines out, give me a shout 😀

I bought a shock bushing tool and some bushings (i think) and they’ve been great. I’d certainly give the bearings a punt at least once to see what they are like.

At least you got another hit on the thread and got to put your price for the bearing kit in.

Kaesae if I order tomorrow would I get them for Thursday?
