Not talking Toy Story or anything like that, but the proper oldies – our little girls are at the age where they will now sit through a film and there are so many I have never, ever seen that are wonderful – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang etc.

But Mary Poppins – what a joyful film – I keep finding myself singing the songs to myself.

So what else do I need to watch out for? We have just ordered Sound of Music (another I have never seen).

[edit] My daughter loved all the cheesey old musicals from early age – Oklahoma and stuff like that. Most are, somewhat surprisingly, quite watchable.

Are you talking about Fantasia? I know, I thought it was a Vietnam war movie too. I assure you it has nothing to do with Asia and is completely appropriate for children. The only other title I think you are referring to as inappropriate is The Lion King, but I think you are confusing that with “The Scorpion King,” the violent movie starring Dwayne Johnson. While the Lion King does have adult themes, it is nothing like The Scorpion King.

Backdoor Creampies – Cindy, a little girl with big ambitions, decides to open a bakery in her parents kitchen – selling pies to children who come to her backyard. Cindy learns that running a business isn’t all fun and games in this hilarious tale of entrepreneurship.

Big Black Threesome – Barry, Billy and Bernie are three lovable black bears who have zany adventures during their quest for honey.

Finally 18 and Legal – A coming of age story about a young girl who becomes an independent woman.

Mattress Slaves 3 – Part 3 of the shocking documentary about slave labor in the mattress industry of third world countries. (Acceptable for kids, and in my opinion, a necessity to educate them on some real world issues. I never bought a foreign mattress again after this eye-opener.)

Wet Squirters 5 – The Squirters gang is back again in this heartwarming tale about a group of whales who try to find their long lost father in a vast ocean of wet sea critters.

A lot of those films are likely to be too old for MF’s kids I reckon – they are quite young. Mine watches films avidly, but if they are too slow ie there’s too much dialogue she’ll wander off. Lots of films you think are going to be great actually have a lot of dialogue, and you don’t realise it until you watch it through their eyes.

It’s not always obvious either. She loves Pirates of the Carribean for instance, lots of action with pirates. Ratatouille on the other hand – you think ‘talking mouse, what’s not to like?’ but there’s loads of exposition in it that might not make sense to a small child. Admittedly she hasn’t watched that in almost a year I suppose.

As for old films – she loves Fantasia (both of them), Cinderella, Robin Hood to an extent and..er.. I’ll have a look 🙂

I wouldn’t go for home alone though. A very sassy kid beats people up. Lovely message.

They love ‘Alien’ too (E.T.). I hoep they don’t ask for ‘Alien’ when granny and grandad are looking after them because I have just got the box set 😈

When I have a child old enough, I will MAKE him or her learn EVERY word of the Princess Bride off by heart. EVERY flipping word. If I have to beat it into him/her. 🙂

Bedknobs and Broomsticks is fantastic, though a bit old for your kids, with Nazis and all.

Ours really liked Dumbo, which surprised me, as did the adult subtexts in most Disney films- I’d thought that was a recent phenomenon post Toy Story.

Pufnstuf is a great character, and stars a young Jack Wild, but not sure whether the show and film made it to this country.

Not at all old but The Polar Express is quickly becoming a yearly tradition in our family.

The other half arrived home with watership down yesterday, cheap from Tesco, what about Bambi, James and the giant peach, snow white and the seven short arses.

The “old” Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory is brilliant. Bit dark in parts maybe though?

Not at all – they love it.

They have also even watched the first part of the original Star Wars (up to the dialogue bit with Luke and hus Uncle when he wants to join the Academy – they got bored then so I haven’t tried them with it again).

James and the Giant Peach is a great call too.
