Into the wild is worth a watch. Has a pretty cool sound track written by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)

    U571

was that the one that was based on the story of the capture of the Enigma machine during WW2, at which point all reality was suspended?
The Enigma machine had already been deciphered months before the US entered the war, U571 was never captured, etc, etc

Anyway, my vote is The Final Countdown, where the nuclear-powered USS Nimitz travels through a timewarp to tackle the Japanese who are about to attack Pearl Harbour. F14 aircraft taking on prop fighters, seriously great for aircraft buffs

That was the point in picking U571 timba, Hollywood takes massive liberties with the phrase based on a true story. 😉

Has no one seen Pride yet? Highly recommended if you haven’t. Metropolitan gay activists meet striking coal miners in South Wales, with predictably hilarious results. Rather moving.

Sort of based on true events, but not a specifically true story in itself, but for anyone who foolishly assumes that a three hour musical about the struggles of poor Jewish farmers in the Russian empire, fighting the threats to their way of life from state sponsored persecution and inter-generational conflict, won’t be fertile ground for comedy, I heartily recommend Fiddler on the Roof.

This is by far the best way to go.

In that vein, probably Margin Call.

Lone Survivor is an amazing example of a rather dull “based on true events” film to my mind. The true events are that four bearded men have a very long gunfight in a forest. It almost literally consists of 2 hours of a bearded man kneeling behind a tree firing a rifle. After a while, you wish the filmmakers had taken some more liberties with the source material – introduced a love interest, a talking pig or some sort of sinister conspiracy involving a biotech company harvesting human organs to make irresistible salad dressings. Anything except some more shooting at things in a wood, really.

    Lone Survivor

You forgot about them repeatedly throwing themselves off the sides of hills with often hilarious painful results. Kind of like what we used to do as kids, but with more beard.

I really struggled with Lone Survivor – Talibani get shot, virtually explodes – SEAL get shot, quick grunt and he’s okay – in fact, shot 5-6 times, rolls down a cliff and it only takes a quick quote from an Motivation Poster and they’re back in the game, well, until they find themselves in an unfortunately cinematic spot when they finally die.

Can’t believe The Great Escape hasn’t been mentioned yet

Also Bridge on the River Kwai needs to go on the list.
