One of my local mates have recently moved areas, so for our next meet up for beers we’re going to head into London rather than meeting locally.

I’d like to have a rough plan of where to head, rather than just aimlessly wandering around trying to find some where that’s not either rough or full of tourists drinking over-priced larger.

Will head in mid-late afternoon on Saturday, and then then hope to have a bit of a pub crawl taking in about 5 pubs. The requirements are as follows:

• Easy tube access from central London – we’ll be coming in from Paddington, Marylebone and Waterloo. So for convenience, it would be good to stay reasonably close to these stations

• Decent beer

• Not touristy area or somewhere where it’s going to be 5 deep at the bar

• Pub where you can hold a conversation and not be drowned out by music

So any suggestions of a few hostelries within easy walking distance taking in the above would be much appreciated.

NB we’re a bunch of 40-something blokes, all of whom are married, so looking for decent beer and conversation rather than anywhere full of youngsters out on the pull!

The Jerusalem Tavern

Been a while bit always been a decent beer when I was there

anywhere nice is going to be busy mid-late afternoon saturday

Last time we were down we went to the Lyceum Tavern, it’s a Sam Smiths so not bad on the price. Was pretty packed though.

sorry, wassn’t clear there. Looking for pubs that can walk between, but fairly are central, can jump back on tube at end of night and head back to mainline stations.

Go to Soho.
Loads of pubs , it’s centralish to all three locations you mentioned.

The Lamb & Flag.

OK it’s in a very touristy part of town but because it’s round the back a lot of the emmets don’t know it’s there.

Good beer, friendly staff and no jukebox. worth the effort to get to.

Generally has a good selection of ale but not an amazing pub. Usually convenient meeting point for me.

The Harp, near Charing Cross
Small and crowded but standing outside with great beer

the Harp (just round the corner from the lamb) is nice

Lamb and Flag is a good call, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is good too.

Was going to say The Harp near Trafalgar Sq/Charing X. Always busy but a cracking wee pub.

Also the Lamb on Lamb’s Conduit Street – nice, old fashioned Young’s Pub – – there’s a couple of other pubs on Lamb’s Conduit St that might fit the bill as well.

It’s central London, on a Saturday, it will be busy. Best set of 4 or 5 pubs within walking distance that I can think of would probably be:

There is another one near Soho, but it’ll be rammed.

We do a Christmas pub crawl in a different area of London every year, this is the agenda from a couple of years ago which takes in the Portabello Road area. Most of these were pretty decent (though the memory of the later ones is ‘Hazy’ and I am sure one or 2 were just ‘filler’ but the organisers do a lot of research).

All pubs are walking distance from one another.

Short walk from Green park which is direct line from Waterloo, and one change from paddington and marylebone

4 pubs there, all are quite nice and you can sit and talk rather than shout.

Whats wrong with the coal hole I ve never had a problem in there, foods apparently ok
but never tried it

Any pub that does Five Points Brewing Co’s beers would be good; outstanding brews, all of them are excellent, the Red and the Porter in particular are highly addictive! Hackney brewery, they supply the Oslo music venue and eatery, which is well worth checking out for anyone who happens to find themselves near Hackney West station.

Coal Hole is a one-time visit for me too! overpriced mediocre beer with service to match!

This is correct. Very good burgers, as well as some astonishing beers. (Some of the beer is far from cheap, by the way!)

Also, in the same area, the Marquis of Westminster is rather pleasant as well. And, for other food options, Uno (Italian), Paradise (Indo-Pak) both on Denbigh Street next door to each other, are excellent.
