I’m 40 miles from the sea, but the duckpond had a 6 foot swell when the wind blew past earlier. And some of the puddles on the ranges last night were big enough to need tide tables.

Many, many Februaries ago I did fishery protection in the north sea in “phenomenal” sea states. Very impressive and I enjoyed it a lot, especially as I was one of very few officers not suffering with sea-sickness which was nice as, being a reservist, I’d got a lot of ribbing out possible sea-sickness before we headed out to sea.

We headed back in after a few days when we realised there were no fishing boats at sea!

Trust me, it looks pretty impressive from the bridge of a relatively small ship (I was on an Island Class which is about 60m long).

As long as they have all the heavy furniture (and gold bars) at the right end,it’ll be reet.

I get that when i see this fellow on the TV. Which is quite a bit as he co-hosts the football on BT Sport

Re that wave height chart as a face. I see something different. With ireland as a massive, sexually engorged ****

it’s something called the Significant Wave Height. as a rule of thumb it’s the mean wave height (peak to trough) of the highest 1/3rd of the waves.

Just seen the news. There was a small vehicle of some kind in it (mower or golf cart or something) but it wasn’t there for long – fell out of the bottom of the garage on the next tide along with the rest of their stuff!

Cheers, knew I’d read something about that before. From your link, and the red blobs (>10m waves) on the map posted by wwaswas above:
1 in 10 will be larger than 10.7 metres (35 ft)
1 in 100 will be larger than 15.1 metres (50 ft)
1 in 1000 will be larger than 18.6 metres (61 ft)
