  • Bearing removal – back to back bearings?

I’ve replaced most of the pivot bearings on my Canyon Spectral, using a screwdriver and mallet to carefully extract them and then a socket and hammer to carefully drift fit the new ones back in.

All ok so far…. however, there is a linkage point at the end of each chainstay, next to the rear hub, where each chainstay arm has a pair of bearings fitted back to back. i.e. Each side of the rear of the chainstay has a bearing press fitted into it.

How do I extract these bearings best?

I guess that I could use a blind bearing puller (the hammer type) to try and extract these, but I’m concerned that if the bearing collapses (as some have on extraction) the centre race will come out and I’ll be left with the main outer race stuck in the chainstay ( how on earth do you then remove that with no way of getting access to the rear of the bearing ?)

Advise and wise words gratefully received 😉

Can’t help with the extraction but in true single track fashion I’d like to warn you in case your are not aware to take note of the order they come out as it sounds like you may have a duplex pairing arangment and hence the order is important.

It can be possible to remove the outer race with the blind puller as well. From experience the key is to pull straight, the only bearing I had collapse was due to me getting over confident.

Heat it up, and stick new bearings in the freezer to aid removal/replacement.

I created one of these (not my original idea), to remove the rear back to back bearing on my m8’s specialised.. dunno if it would fit yours (someone tried it on a new spesh and it didn’t fit) but may give you idea’s…

Not sure of canyon’s design for these but specialised have a metal lip between the bearings meaning they need to be pulled out from either side and will not both pull out in one direction. You can’t see the lip when the bearings are in and a small washer inbetween makes it look like the bearings are back to back.

I’d say pull out from each side with bearing puller if you’ve got one just to be sure. 🙂

    Thanks for the feedback chaps

My mistake in describing the bearing arrangement – yes there is a metal lip between the two seperate bearings.

    I’ll look into making/buying a suitable puller

Stick the offending bearing/part in a pan of boiling hot water to expand the aluminium, then blind bearing puller.

using a screwdriver and mallet to

You’re fired. Clock out go home, dont come back.

…..I tried gaffer tape and tiewraps first and that didn’t work….so I used the only two other tools I had to hand 😉
