Bear is a liar, I recall one program when he was buried in a snow hole for a night. Came out next day with different coat and clothes on. Not just subtly different but completely different, he was caught out with that and admitted to staying in a hotel. Lost all his street cred in our household after that.

I have a friend who has some intereting stories about him during his time in the military. Sounds like his survival skills have come a long way since those days :-/

Hes sponsored by Craghoppers, assume on their website.

Surely though if your serious about a mat you would just buy a thermorest or such like, and not something endorsed by some one who likes his hotel beds.

I really want to like BG, but i can’t. I’ve been wondering why this is, and i think i’ve come up with the answer; i’m just too old. He’s like the Radio 1 of survivalists, with Ray Mears being Radio 2.

Really admire the stuff he does with various youth organisations, but his TV stuff is generally unwatchable.

My brother doesn’t think its a dream weaver.

Top Gear are just as fake, but people don’t seem to whine about that as much.

He’s just making a living, and probably far better off for it than most on here.

I’m aware he’s not a pro as many in here.

Yeah it was the dream weaver. I spotted that and liked the look of it.

It even has an integrated pillow in case you forget yours.

and can’t be arsed to phone reception and ask room service to bring one up.

It’s aspirational tv, not documentary – if it inspires people to get outdoors a bit more then all is good 🙂

I told him to piss off once….maybe twice (trying to row out to ‘his’ island in a 30knot offshore/8ft swell and me being on the lifeboat incident).

Was the swell/location in a park paddling lake?

For the doubters, you should read his auto-biography, quite an eye-opener in a good way.

Ref: staying in a hotel – his wife & kid(s) managed to briefly visit the country he was filming in, so he chose to go stay with them rather than
on the mountain – can’t blame him TBH.

    Aspirational TV?
Is that newspeak for a pile of made up toss?
No respect for the man at all.

And I hate Top Gear for exactly the same reason.

Oh, no one’s saying they could do better – just that they hate being lied to in such a blatant and unprofessional manner.
    It’s insulting, frankly.

You’ll be telling me Fireman Sam isn’t a real Fireman next.

Haters are upset because he’s making a good living in entertainment.

I personally don’t hate or have a grudge – can’t think why people would, he’s in entertainment not documentary as already said. Got to admit I prefer Ray Mears though.

So if it’s not a documentary, where are the disclaimers?
Why are they marketing his shows as fact?
Why not just be honest and get a proper actor in, instead of presenting lies as truth?

It’s lazy, dishonest, dumbed-down visual Prozac for the easily pleased.

There used to be a disclaimer of some sort in the opening credits before his programs…….is it not there now ??

I think from memory it was along the lines of …this isn’t a real life situation but all the info portrayed is there to help you if found in a life or death survival situation ….

    RustySpanner

The disclaimer said ‘…he receives support in potentially life threatening situations’.

    Not exactly transparent.
    Or honest, come to that.

And the disclaimer was only added on certain channels AFTER he was sussed.

Does that mean Bob the Builder isn’t a proper builder …… 😐

I’ll be a Mears man till I die, watched him wi’ me dad as a lad, bushcraft is interesting and good to see what can be made out of bugger all, his foraging is enjoyable too.
Bear is just batshit crazy, and it’s fun to watch him chuck him sen down and off stuff, i don’t give two turds if he stays in a hotel. If your not watching him with a pinch of salt your gonna have issues. It’s TV, it’s all fake any road.
As has been said, hayterzzz gun h8.

Rusty …did you get this upset when they told you Father Christmas wasn’t real ??

BG has always annoyed me, he has this military mindset that makes every outdoor foray a battle to be won, every little problem a fight against overwhelming odds! Much prefer Ray Mears’ attitude where the outdoors is something you work with, not fight against.
