    Apparently,

A range of sports experts from newspapers and magazines across the UK were asked to send in their top 10 selections

    BBC how they voted

Quite interesting to see which papers align with which sports

I’m not sure the Manchester Evening News understood the question.

    So is Grey-Thompson being sexist?

Welsh Paralympic great Baroness Grey-Thompson has criticised the absence of women from the BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist. The 10 nominations were compiled by a panel of sports editors from national and regional newspapers and magazines.

“The feeling is there’s not a woman who can make it on to the top 10 in the list,” Grey-Thompson told BBC Wales.”It just means that women’s sport keeps getting shut out and it just highlights where we are in women’s sport.”

I agree that not having the likes of Chrissie Wellington and Keri-Anne Payne shows a questionable shortlist but that is because they deserve to be there for their sport/sporting personality not on the basis of their sex. Don’t we eradicate sexism, when sex is not used to justify an argument at all?

Some frankly quite bizarre picks from some of those papers. The highlight from those I had to google has to be Nicola Adams – not only competing in that major sport of women’s boxing, but she’s achieved the giddy heights of being ranked #3 in the world. Clearly a far more deserving candidate than Cav, who The Voice didn’t deem worthy of a place on the shortlist. To be fair they’re clearly not anti-cyclist, as they did include Shanaze Reade, who doesn’t appear to have won anything of note this year.

I hope the BBC use X-Factor voice over man

Given that the BBC showed the world champs this year, Cav probably has much better chance of winning than he would otherwise.

    Andy Murray- a “personality”?

    Really?

He’s the human equivilant of a Coldplay record FFS…

The Most dour, boring sounding, unispiring, Scottish lad ever.

    Apart from maybe Gordon Brown…

No still don’t like the fella and won’t be voting. I really don’t want cycling to become a celeb sport (even if it does only last a few years) so really have no interest in the whole thing, yet another promotion tool for a tiny minority. I don’t do X-Factor, why would I do this?

And please don’t think it will change anyone’s perception of cycling or how they behave towards us. And to be honest seeing how poorly a lot of cycle riders behave just recently I’m not even sure we deserve any better treatment.

Basically he became a legit world class fighter after his war with Maidana in Dec of last year. Holds two world champ belts at light welter and easily the best boxer we have in the UK. So it’s a bit early for him, as he is not at the true elite level of his sport (yet) the way Cav is, but it’s not an outrageous nomination.

It probably would be, if I recognised any of the names on the list.

Andy Murray? Personality? Do me a favor. I know its been a slow year sports wise but really?!

Now that is an interesting comment coming from a supposed cyclist. Given the rest of your post, I have to assume it’s not a troll. So given some cyclists jump red lights, car drivers are perfectly justified in cutting up and knocking off other cyclists? That is what you mean I presume?

It’s a shame Mark Renshaw isn’t nomimated too.

He could be ahead on the votes, with Cav running a close second until just before the close of voting – and then with a sudden surge…

I was just going to say that Cav has no chance because he’s not everyone’s cup of tea personality-wise. But then with Ryan Giggs and Damon Hill winning, I guess it’s not all down to that.

If Cav can reveal himself as a life long ManU supporter then he must have as good a chance as Mr Giggs.

The one thing about cyclists is they can be an organised bunch sometimes – a concerted effort to vote for Cav could do it.

    See above for a precedent.

I’m not sure the Manchester Evening News understood the question.

The last time a Brit won the Cycling Worlds they won this.

Im sure Peta can mobilise some support for the lad.

And he definitely has a personality

In terms of stage wins in grand tours, yes – try not removing too much of the context when snipping:

Cav is almost in the top ten of Grand tour stage wins ever now, by the end of next season he will be in the top ten mixing it up with Hinault, Coppi and Merckx.

We all HAVE TO VOTE FOR CAV – we managed it for Sir Chris, now it’s got to be done for Cav too – no question he deserves it! 😀

Ok, i’ll try to be clearer, you’re not really saying he’s a rider of the same class as those are you?

Cav would indeed be a very deserving winner but I really do think that both Jamie Bestwick and Danny Hart have been overlooked somewhat. Danny’s acheivement was astonishing to say the least, putting almost 12 seconds into the rest of the WORLD, in the wet, in Champery and he is only 19! Jamies Bestwick has also acheived for BMX what so many dream of, winning 5 X-Games straight is something else.
Ok, downhill and BMX may not be mainstream but this is about sporting acheivement and these guys have made some exceptional ones. I can only imagine what it would be like to see that crowd watch Danny’s run with Warner and Pagey on the mic.
    Anyway, bit said.

How comes no womens made it into the top 10. I’m not a big sports fan, but did the best woman not even excel to the standard of the tenth best man?

Well the statement is there for you to read. What do you think we’re really saying?

Ok, downhill and BMX may not be mainstream

They’re not even mainstream cycling – I’m sure I can’t be the only person on here who’d have to google the two chaps you mentioned.

    this is about sporting acheivement

I see the mistake you’re making.
