Hi, we’re looking at getting our bathroom stripped out and refitted. We’ve got a quote for the bits and the fitting, just wondering what the STW view was. Feels reasonable to me but i’ve not done this level of works to a bathroom before!

So, we’re stripping out bath, toilet, sink, rad and floor and wall tiles. Supply of new bath, shower, shower cubicle, sink unit,towel warmer thing and taps and tiles for floor and walls. Then obviously cost to fit it all, plus leds and new switches for lighting,and an extract fan.

It’s nice stuff but not bonkers top of the range so….
Kit – £2800
Fitting – £2000

Any views?

Oaffft, seems excessive to me. Looking to do the exact same work as you in the next couple of weeks but looking to do he whole shabang for <2k! I will be doing quite a bit of the fitting/ tiling though

Fitting costs not too bad for a full strip out and start again job. Hard to say if £2800 is value or not without knowing what make is been supplied. If it’s Villeroy & Boch you’ve got a bargin.

What size is your bathroom the tiles and labour alone will probably come to over 2k.

We have just had our bathroom done. We had high end kit but shopped around for tiles. You’ve got a good deal I think but it depends on the size of your bathroom.

Ours is 9m2 – we had limestone put down on the floor. We got 13m2 walls tiled. We have a stone resin shower tray with a large glass cubicle (merlyn series 8), roll top bath, Imperial WC and basin (and the world’s most expensive toilet seat!).

Not sure how big your bathroom is but ours cost more than your quote. If your fitter takes 2 weeks then £2000 is reasonable IMO.

Thanks for the replies guys, it’s only 5m Sq of floor tiles and 12m Sq of wall tiles, not a huge room. The kit is reasonable level, not bonkers stuff but definitely nice quality. It’s 1200 by 700 frameless cubicle, shower with a main head and one on a riser bar with a separate thermostatic valve. 1500 bath, with panels and thermostatic valve rather than taps, basin with unit underneath.

The fitter has said 2 weeks.

Seems fine to me.

We had LEDs installed just prior to the bathroom being done too.

Hi, I’m a plumber and bathroom/kitchen fitter. I specialise in bathrooms. There are many variables which can have a marked effect on pricing. What you have described sounds about right for an average bathroom. It may be a little lean. Don’t forget, you can pay a lot for a load of you know what. I’ve come across many fitters who claim to have been in the business for years and years and have been doing rubbish work for as long.
You nearly always get what you pay for. Ask for references and be sure to follow them up.
Incidentally, I only work on recommendation. I do no advertising at all and rely totally on word of mouth. That’s not because I’m cheap, it’s because I’m trusted. A large portion of my income is thanks to other fitters who have done poor work that needs to be remedied.
You need someone who has a good track record.
Words of advice for would be bathroom buyers. Never let a “mate” do you a deal!
All in all, you may be ok. Make sure to get a written quote with a lot of detail. Bathrooms take time and a fitter who has put in a low bid to get the work and later encounters problems will use up any wiggle room you leave open.

Thanks gears, good advice. The fitter was recommended by the supplier, but recently fitted my sister’s bathroom to very high standard. Finish was very good and no snags one year in. We’ve also seen evidence from previous bathrooms which look excellent.
Totally agree on mates rates, previous house had our bathroom done which took 3 months! The quote gives the impression its a fixed price but I plan to confirm this prior to starting. The quote details pretty much every item, including strip out and install, and notes exceptional items such as supply of light fittings, disposal of waste.

I’m also a bathroom and kitchen fitter in Leicestershire. I 100% agree with Gears. Bathrooms are probably the most time consuming of the refitting jobs and anyone who quotes too low is probably compromising something somewhere as you need time to do the job right.

Get references, check previous jobs, agree a figure but be aware that sometimes problems are unearthed as you strip out the existing fittings and agreed extras can occur so keep a contingency.

The figures above sound do able for a std sized bathroom depending on exact fixtures and fittings but be realistic. A quote I’m working on at the moment, the client has 3k total spend available but has picked out a £500 shower, wall mounted basin and toilet, sandstone tiles etc. the parts alone add up to £2900, doesn’t leave a lot left for the fit!
