Every so often a celeb pops off the mortal coil and it does make me a little sad. Barry Norman is one of them. Used to watch his film reviews as a youngster when we first got UK channels in Ireland and he was one of the people that got me interested in cinema. So cheers for all the episodes on Film 19xx Barry.

For me it’s a toss-up between Piers Morgan and John Terry.

    🙁

Was only thinking recently, what’s Barry Norman up to these days?

As Totalshell writes, superb humour. One in particular always stands out for me, mostly because life has occasion to re-use it… on a review of the awful Anaconda, he was trying desperately to find something good about it and relied on the sound acting of Jon Voight…

“…throughout Voight’s character is seen to display his excellent leer at any opportunity. Indeed, you could say it’s a king leer…”

Or something along those lines. 🙂

I didn’t follow up on his replacement on Film xx and missed him from then, really.

Aside : His dad directed The Cruel Sea.

RIP, Barry. Thanks for the laughs.

Yeah, he was usually a pretty reliable source on the film review front. Nobody else done it so well since. Fan of Pretty Woman IIRC, which was a slight blot.
I was always fascinated by how big his eye bags got over the years.

He got me into films, found him very engaging and witty. RIP

    “And why not?”

Interesting fact about that: It was originally something he said occasionally, but it didn’t become a catchphrase until Spitting Image latched onto it and had his caricature say it all the time. He reclaimed it from them.

Got me into films and Nina Simone. Via the theme tune which she sang as
“I wish I knew how it would feel to be free”

Loved the programme – rarely missed an episode. Equally rarely watched it with Ross. Knowledgable and watchable. RIP.
