    For my general education, can one tell anything useful about a cricket ball by sniffing it during play? Or is that just an incredibly stupid made-up excuse that fools no-one? 🙂

    What he should have said was that he wasn't sniffing the ball for the sake of it, but that he was trying to inhale the aroma of his team mates who had been shining the ball by rubbing it in their groins.
