Just bought myself a second hand road bike and can't bring myself to get fully lycra-ed up, so can anyone recommend some MTB-er friendly shorts for road riding? Preferably sub-£50 and with pad.

    Thanks in advance.

just buy some lycra shorts two sizes too big, they should flap about a bit.

Wear the Lycra and ride the bike or sell the bike and don't wear the Lycra.

    Pick a side.

Any cycling baggy shorts with a pad for less than £50 that you like the look of and feel comfortable in.
There are no road cycling specif baggy shorts that I'm aware of.
Decathlon do some cheap ones that are quite short. £20 a pair, I think.

only ones i found when looking were the rapha touring & fixie shorts. but there expensive, so I gave in and bought some 3/4 bibs. I couldnt care less what I look like, they feel awesome and I'd forgotten how good it was to ride a bike fast without clothing flapping about. man up.

What's the deal with the whole "baggies for MTB" thing anyway? I've never seen the point.

A couple of years back a bought a road bike – really just to sit on the turbo and give me a better range of gears – rather the mess up a perfectly good mtb. Then the better weather came and it thought it can’t hurt just short-ish ride – you know – I can handle it – I’ll stay close to my mtb roots – baggies – camelback peaked helmet
Anyway one ride soon became several rides and a quick hour became 3-5 hr rides – now I have bib shorts and roadie tops nice and tight – thing is riding at road bike speeds and distances flapping baggy clothing is at very least annoying and at worst can cause chafing (think joggers nipple) – so embrace the lycra –

    Lycra is offensive.
Just wear your baggies. Roadies will think you look stupid, the rest of the planet will thank you.

Another vote here for the 'get over yourself'. Just embrace the lycra. You don't have to shave your legs though.

^ thats optional, but when you look down and see hair poking through the lycra, you'll consider it…. hmmm

charge bikes clothing range might be worth a look. tbh wear your mtb baggies and if you get into it youll want some lycra. bibs on longer road rides for me are the best. mind you i dont ride road these days!

Have a look at the Maloja Berlin shorts – might be just what you're after.

I get the hair poking through too – makes me wonder about shaving under the shorts and leaving the exposed bits fuzzy…..

i'm not like a bear if thats what your thinking 😆

I would class myself as not a particularly hairy guy, just one day last week I looked down and there were a few random hairs poking through on the tops of my thighs, not a good look.

edit: Glad im not the only one…

ah your on your own there, fortunatley I give that region a going over with the clippers. Infact I may well just carry on south next time and get the thighs trimmed a bit…

    anyway, back on subject 😉

Anyone go shopping in their lycra? It would make pushing the trolley round more efficient surely?

    errr…… no I won't

besides, can't you just shave the ones that poke through?
