I'm sick of cold knees and legs so invested in Lycra power, with a padded arse bit to boot. Now is it wrong to wear these under my varying baggy shorts, owt from next to army cut offs! Will I be ridiculed by the stw massive and other such "types"?

I always used to ride with ronhills, dinese knee/shin pads, and various baggies with padded liners.
Works a treat for keeping the legs warm.

Well it depends whether you make a post telling everyone about it.......oh wait.

Given the insecurities you have displayed by creating such a thread, I'd say you should stick to the baggies as part of your ATGNI/weekend-warrior getup.

I always wear bibshorts under any old baggy shorts to mountain bike unless it's serious training or racing then it's lycra only .Only really wear baggy shorts so my bolloxs aren't on display in the pub

Dougal dougal. I played golf with a cheap 200 pound set and beat most comers and I've been out for the last three days on the bounce on th bike, even avoiding Saturday because it's busy. Try harder with your sarcasm sweetie!

Who gives a sh!t what the 'STW massive' (whoever that is) think. Do what suits you to keep you warm etc.

I've got endura singletrack pants with lycra liner (standard length to above the knee)
Best of both worlds I reckonPosted 2 years ago # -
Baggies over - don't want ladies gawping at your large testicles.

Or wilted cold member!

I go for baggies with either 3/4 length padded lycra or just knee length. Really warm in the winter and nice and comfy.

warm and comfy means riding for longer, knee and arm warmers are the best cycle clothing invention everPosted 2 years ago # -
Get it done.
Gore Xenon Raw 3/4's on their own on road and then covered in Fusion Plus baggies on le hills. Bosh.

I was wondering about this combo today, its becoming increasingly popular.
Whats the point of the shorts over the lycra, is it a fashion thing or is it to hide a big ar$e?
Posted 2 years ago # -
I wear shorts (sometimes baggy) over bib tights. I've heard people have worn through cycling clothing because of mud chucked off the back wheel and then rubbing their arse on the saddle.
I also think its not nice when your climbing up a hill behind someone and can quite clearly see their arse through their lycra wobbling left and right in front of you!!!
Therefore, i wear shorts over the top.

warm and comfy for me. have only ever worn lycra on it's own once, final lap of mayhem last year when chafing was becoming an 'issue'.

I wear my cod piece (black adder fan) under northwave tights

For some obscure reason some people can't ride without any some sort of padding (ok by obscure read weight saving saddle). So you can use a bib under your short and get both of both world. The "padding" if you need one, and the practicality of the short. in terms of comfort I just can't stand lycra any more I just cant try to put back on my 3/4 length bib a few month ago, and I just couldn't stand it... So if you want to do it. Just do it...

+1 on the warm/comfy thing (but then I am getting old).
This time of year, I find that decent 3/4 bibs (for my knees) then baggy'ish shorts is ideal. The baggies give you a bit more protection from the wet / wind, plus, more pockets.

i wear some adidas techfit lycras under my padded baggies, warm and comfy. the only problem is they aren't quite long enough :/
Posted 2 years ago # -
I wear bib shorts.
Put baggies on for the pub as there is no where to put the changePosted 2 years ago # -
Baggies+lycra = The Mickey Mouse

Winter lycra (full length bib) for warmth, baggies for coverage and pockets.
Together, spot on.

Definitely baggies over tights if I'm wearing leg armour. Body armour and lycra is just too gay otherwise.

what purpose to the baggies serve other than to ensure you are conforming to the mountain biking community uniform and are not considered an outcast in the same way that an intersex child with a hairlip might have been in Victorian times?
Posted 2 years ago # -
there comfy, warm, offer protection and I have no desire to look like a muddy roadie.

Lycra padded undershorts and baggies over the top for me.
Posted 2 years ago # -
i winter, i wear the baggy shorts and tee shirt i'd wear in summer, with full length bibs under. Helps keep you warm and dry, and stop crap getting into sealskinz socks. No big deal
Posted 2 years ago # -
Was just lycra until about 5 years ago when some random stranger pointed out they could see my arse crack through the old lycra shorts! Been baggies all the way ever since.
Posted 2 years ago # -
>what purpose to the baggies serve other than to ensure you are conforming to the mountain biking community uniform
Exactly.
Just stick to lycra (weight/warmth of your choice) and have done with it - peel it off afterwards and it takes the mud with it (particularly if you've a car to get into) and not wearing shorts* is one thing less to wash.
Tsk, mtbers nowadays, bunch of fashion queens
*jersey or Camelbak surely cover the pockets angle...

Well if you have a camel back jersay pocket are useless as the camel hides them.Plus I don't want to remove my camel, open it and look for the map, a bar if I can use the pocket of my short.
I quite not see the advantage of a lycra for 99.99% of the people on here. Expect snobbery.
