How do you deal with a sweaty helmet? no not donw there but on top?

I commute to work every day and cycle regularly at the weekends too. I have noticed my helmet is very smelly. One of the pads has become unglued as well (from the shell).

How do others keep thier helmet clean? Do you remove the pads and wash them?

I put it in the bath full of bubbles… swish it round for a few mins… then hang it.

    Buy another helmet and alternate.

    Hand wash pads.

Buy spare pads and swap out.

A merino beanie goes a long way to keeping the niffs manageable. Alternatively, wear a buff and wash using a decent sports wash.

I was thinking of buying another…any recommendations?

Also I was thinking of using a bandana to help soak up the sweat

Soak in a bucket of sterilizing fluid.

I have always just put mine in the sink with a bit of bio washing powder.

Didnt kill it in 8 or so years of use.

Stop sniffing your helmet, that’s my technique.

Also, spare helmet for road duties.

Chuck in bath, before it becomes a health hazard.

I occasionally wash mine with a bit of shampoo.

TOP TIP: As soon as you take it off, soak up the sweat from the pads with some kitchen roll or paper towels. It keeps away any smelliness for much longer.

Head and shoulders. Lather up your hair then stick the helmet on top. Then take it off and rub the pads a bit. Then sick it back on and rinse.

Worked a treat on mine, and that was so bad it made me gag.

Rince it with water as people have said, if your other half doesn’t mind hang it on the Bannister to get it to dry over night.

Be cautious of leaving it in the sun to dry as prolonged UV light effects them somehow, and 8 years of use from one helmet… it may be marketing rubbish but I’d stick to replacing my lid every 3-5 years.

Just wash mine in the shower now and again, more commonly because it’s muddy though, don’t find my pads get particularly manky. Replace them periodically too.

+1 on sticking it in the shower. I just give the pads a rub with a bit of shower gel and good to go.

+1 for dezB’s idea of drying with kitchen towel. It’s almost become a ritual for me at events like the 24/12 – nothing worse than putting a cold, sweaty bike helmet back on.

Yup, pads out and in one of those mesh zip-up bags the wife washes her bras in.

Wash them on a cool ash with your bash layers etc, dry them out properly and all’s well.
