    Athlete or not?
I’d say yes, if he’s winning at judo.

Thats becuse the other guy hasnt got a chance of throwing him.

He’s not what would normally be considered ‘athletic’, but if he can do the correct Judo techniques then fair enough

Also depends how you define ‘athlete’ … perhaps ‘competitor’ would be a more universal label

[jeremy carkson] He’s still smaller than the average American though [/jeremy jlarkson]

It seems a bit unfair to me, there should be an upper weight limit.

Athlete = someone involved in athletics?

    I’d say he’s a judo player. 😉

the other guy should try putting some weight on then. if the rules say hes allowed to be stupidly big then fair play.

still tho he is not al athelite. but he is a sportsman

Is he proficient in sports and other forms of physical excercise?
    Yes?
    Then he’s an athlete.

Does one have to be ‘athletic’ to be an ‘athlete’?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sportsperson

A sportsperson… or athlete is a person trained to compete in a sport involving physical strength, speed or endurance.

Can’t see how semantics matter too much anyway. Crux is, he’s in the Olympics and you aren’t.

Would you be in favour of a lower weight limit in some sports if it could be shown that being lighter was an advantage (e.g. the cox in the mens eight in rowing)?

    ^ Sportsperson

And I would say an athlete is a sportsman.

    Not all sportsmen are athletes.

cant see the commentator in that link being quite so insulting if he was in the room with the guy. Valid point about is it fair to have to throw someone that weighs that much… could Japan enter their biggest sumo wrestlers?

Blas Jr is more than 10 stone heavier than any other athlete in the Olympics – and 6st 10lbs heavier than the entire Japan women’s gymnastics team.

Good question druidh, although it doesn’t seem to have been an issue, no cox anorexics have been put forward. A ten stone weight advantage in a sport where you attempt to physically throw your opponent seems a bit much to expect, imagin that weight difference in Boxing.

Only other query would be whether he has athlete’s feet.

ironically more athletic (IMO) than a down the line shooter.

That weight difference is perfectly possible in boxing, the superheavyweight division in boxing has no upper limit, its +91kg, the heavyweight division in judo is +100kg.

Also it looks like he’s just been thrown…

Judoists always say it’s not about strength, it’s about turning your opponent’s weight against them. Either they’ve been lying to me all these years or he’s doomed.

Looks to me that that is exactly what the Cuban did
