I got a french lass in my crosshairs and I figured that she might appreciate the effort if I (at least attempted to) ask her out in her mother tongue.

So, can any STWers fluent in Gallic give me a decent translation of …

Yes, yes.. I know it's not original but I can need to keep it simple or else risk **** it up.

I will be running all suggestions through babelfish, just in case – so no taking advantage of my ignorance & try to get me to ask her for a champagne enema or some such nonsense.

I bet no-one has a shitter reason for not getting the (french) girl than me. I was visiting a mate in Lille and gave my number to a girl who by chance was coming over to Reading Uni to study where I lived. Didn't expect a call, so didn't react well when she did. In a particularly dull witted moment, I asked her to phone back as I couldn't come to the phone because I was standing on the table having the bottom of my cricket whites pinned up by my mum in preparation for the new season.

you dont need to say the salut if you're already talking to her..or indeed the dit voir..you could just do a british pause and "uuuhm Beryl.."

Realised we were living in different times a few years ago when we bought a French-English phrase book published by the AA as back up for my schoolboy french when we went there on holiday. The section on 'dating and socialising' certainly brightened up the long car journey to the Alps as we learned the French for stuff like "yes I will sleep with you, but you must use a condom".
