I amass ‘stuff’ from all over the place, got no plan, don’t know good from bad. The ‘net must be chock full of aspiring artists flogging their wares?

I make most of it, badly. I buy the very occasional thing that I really like. I think I’ve bought one water painting and a couple of prints in the last ten years.

From artists mostly.

End of degree shows are a good place to pick up artwork at decent prices. I’ve bought a few things from the Photography and illustration courses at Manchester Uni.

Also got some stuff from smaller galleries. Find somewhere that does stuff you like. I love Pop Art, so I’ve had a few things from JG’s in the Northern Quarter.

I have always bought things that I like ,rather than buying as an investment.
If you are lucky it can be both.

My daughters produce some quite good stuff so that generally getys displayed.

They buy stuff from Etsy which is a kind of ebay for artists / homemade stuff, and seems like quite a good way to make sure those struggling artist types get some money and a market for their goods.

A few things from local galleries, but I’ve never spent more than £100 or so. I have a couple of prints of my uncles from the 70s that are special to me, and the family. Bought a couple of framed photo’s / prints of holiday locations from galleries in the locale as well.

I do have the odd Ikea print, but these are slowly being disposed of.

I’ve got an industrial thing going on at the shop, some framed old plans and blueprints and some lovely casting patterns made out of wood. Plus a couple of Mint Sauce prints.

At home, we’ve got a big IKEA canvas in the kitchen which I’m forbidden from removing 😉

Possibly the best way to buy art is direct from students at their degree shows, it can be a risky investment but you might get lucky.

I think the market is changing a little with the advent of artists producing their own websites, find an artist and contact them directly.

It’s also worth looking at auction houses sales of contemporary art, you can find some really well known artists work for not a whole lot of money. Don’t think that folks like Christies, Bonhams, Phillips or Lyon and Turnbull would be out of your reach, you’d be surprised.

Depends on the type – I always try and get something abroad (travel quite a bit), ebay can be good as well as various websites, again all depending on type.

Just picked up a gorgeous ceremonial Indian paddle in Alaska to hang on the wall.

Tend to get wall mounted items rather than ceramics.

I steal it from galleries in daring heists.

I bought a Quentin Bell from his studio and I bought some Tapfuma Gutsa work from London and Harare. I’ve bought some really good vintage African masks from Ebay (some were crap which got moved on). My own paintings and stuff just acquired over the years from all sorts of places – galleries, shops, craft markets – UK and abroad.

I have a few singed low edition prints from various artists including Faile, Conor Harrington and Banksy but I’ve only ever bought something because I loved it. If I bought something as an investment I’d probably get it wrong.

Ours is a mixture of photography (mine and professional) and things we see that we like. I have a print of a lovely painting of hms endurance before it got crippled. No naval history of any sort in our family but I love boats and the sea/water features.

Dad is really into his photography so we will hopefully poach some from his exhibition / competition stock.

Off’ve me easel and some bits and bobs from artist friends. Other than that from private galleries. Never bought online for some reason, I generally require to see stuff in the flesh unless it’s a print.

Was going to recommend mcmoonter but I see he’s beaten me to it! I also attempt to make my own, also badly (unlike mcm) but also invest in first editions of books I like very much.

I’m a better judge of literature than of art and have done quite well out of it so far.
