Probably more to fix than buy a new one TBH, but check with the manufacturer, sometimes it is surprising.
Personally always been happy with canons, just learn not to drop them and you'll be fine 
Waterproof is a bit harder though.

I love Canons but the Ixus970 was always slippery.

I got the missus one last xmas. Very good colour rendition and it's got a 28mm equivalent wide angle on the zoom, not the usual 35mm, which is handy.
Not quite so good with isolated subjects and flash though. Tends to overexpose.
i contacted canon to repair my 80is as it took pics with a verticle blue line down them, some sort of censor fault, quoted £140 to fix (it only cost £199 2 years ago) but worth contacting canon uk, they were very prompt and recommended a repairer

I went with an Olympus Mju-850 (£99 at Staples) recently because with bike riding and on the beach etc. I find I give compact cameras quite a hard time and like the fact it's waterproof and shockproof. Ok it's not the best quality results but I've DSLR's for when that's important.
Jessops will likely charge you 120-200, other repairers i can't say, so you decide.
The canon tough camera - D10? is built like a brick but isn't very compact. as the lens casing is quite prominent.
Mju toughs are about the same image as the canon quality wise, have seen a few come back to repair through our store, generally a little better for values and usually have some nifty features like "tap control" which is designed to let you use it while wearing gloves. Also more compact than the canon.
Haven't seen a pentax waterproof camera for a while so can't really say much about it.
Panasonic do a waterproof / tough camera. Yet again havent had my hands on one but i reckon it's worth a look.
I had an olympus, picture quality was poor, movie mode not too good although apparently better on the newer one coming out.
Now have the panasonic, picture quality is up there with all but the best compacts, movie mode is great.
played with the pentax but the controls were horrible
Canon has a sticky out lens so isn't compact, but takes great pictures.
There are a whole bunch of new waterproofs coming out, sony and casio ones look interesting, think the sony uses their new fancy cmos sensor thing.
Just bought a Olympus Mju Tough 3000, seems fairly robust and intuitive to use, I'll see if it works this weekend, as long as it does not snow again..........

hows the ft1 with pics and videos ?
pics are great (for a compact), Its hard to show it off because its not exceptional its just good, I've not tried taking any fancy arty shots with it just to show off that it has a great macro mode or anything like that.
One thing to be aware of with the video is that the HD is in AVCHD format, which lets you fit a lot of film onto one memory card, think i could do about 4 hours of HD on my 16gb card if the battery lasted that long. The software you get with it for pc's isn't the best but imovie on a mac lets you work with it easily.
Ixuses are usually durable. Not armoured tough but still pretty solid. My 800IS is still going strong despite multiple attempts to murder it. If I wanted a sensibly tough camera that doesn't make compromises like the ruggedised ones usually do, I'd buy another for sure.
Do speak to Canon, it can't hurt... they were very very good on the one occasion I did manage to properly break my old one, sent it in, they passed it to their repairer, told me it was beyond economic repair but bodged it back together for free and sent it back, along with a wee note saying "We've never seen one of these broken like this before, well done". TBH sounds like it won't be worthwhile for you though but it's worth a try.
Damn, that's a shame. I'd be gutted if I wrecked my TZ3, even though it's several years old, now. Hope you find something that takes as good photos. Can't recommend a rufty-tufty camera, not sure that the damage resistant ones match the spec you get from a regular camera. I love the Lumix cameras, reviews of the Mu cameras have always been a bit lacklustre, Ixus always seem to produce very good results. Confusing choice.
