How often do you get passed per lap at Mayhem, say?
What on earth would that have to do with it?

Well if you are good, you'll be passed less and pass more yourself, surely?
Well I passed more people than I was passed by at Mayhem, but I have no idea what 'grade' of rider I am.
Quite good on climbs, reasonable pace and stamina, bit skittish on gnarly descents, healthy fear of Death.
I was pretty quick and fit when I was a courier, but there were still plenty out there who were silly fast.
Not bothered really; I have enough ability to allow me to enjoy the sort of riding I do, and that's all that matters to me.

Depends how you define good I suppose. To me being good on a bike implies technical ability, not just fitness.
I bet you could take someone who had barely ridden off road but was super-fit, and they'd do reasonably well at Mayhem (at least in the dry). Put the same person on the WC Downhill at Fort William and what would happen?
Compared to the average man in the street who never/rarely rides bikes I am a riding God.
Compared to Steve Peat I can barely ride a bike.
Campared to my mates (and I would imagine the wider mountian bike community) I am OK. I am fat and so struggle to go up hill quickly but I am not bad going downhill, certainly faster than most of my mates. However, put a jump in front of me and I suddenly become a rigid with fear and revert to uselessness.
I dont race but I do ride competitively and I've never been overtaken at any trail centre I've ridden.
This is like commuter racing, most of the people are not racing you.

Perhaps so, but its because they're lacking "the edge" and the natural fighting will and competitive instinct.
This comes completely naturally to me so I've got the upper hand straight away.
You must work is sales.
Or comedy.
Over the internet I can't be sure which.
@ dt....Pure class
Erm.. not as good as I once was, for sure.
MTB
I love technical hills but i gas a lot and take my time, not bothered about downhills so no decender, love the tricky technical bits so ok at that particular aspect, likes fast singletrack so ok at progressive rolling speed switchback stuff.. Not good with heights..
Roadie
Still gas a lot on mountains (done a few of those fellas) so tend to dig a bit and admire the view through pulsing eyes.. with occasional outbursts of brilliance followed quickly by death. I'm a puncheur by heart so will go on a break to be crawled back in within 10k..
So, I'm above average then, just.
Been riding for about 15 years now. Dad still running along holding saddle
Bloody hell, he must be knackered.
I'm pretty average, but I don't find it slows me down, in fact the quite opposite, which is where the trouble usually starts. No matter, I just love riding bikes!
Depends how you define good I suppose
Aye, that it does

Brilliant,thanks for that
If I can just keep going ,all the competition will give up or die off.
i'm awesome, tbf.
No you're not. you're just a very very naughty Flatboy I'm afraid.

So irresponsible....
i went past those steps in the car the other day and was reminded of that picture!
I am distinctly average. How often do I get overtaken? Well soloing both SITS and Strathpuffer I was lapped while still on my first lap.
However I finished far from last with a respectable placing. (in the top bit of the bottom half)
Average! I'm only in my mid twentys but i was better 6 years ago and could keep a reasonable pace doing downhill runs in the alps.
Had a few accidents since and i'm only really just getting back into the more technical stuff, my drop offs etc are getting better but I'm only good for about a 3ft drop off at the moment.
But i love it so who cares
Is that the tunnel under the Barbican Elfinsaftey/flatboy?
Nope, I mince along at tourist pace, taking in the view, stopping continually to take photographs or to talk to cows / sheep / horses / birds.
If I had room in my saddle-bag I'd take sandwiches* and a small primus stove (or a flask) out with me (probably anyway), even if I was only out for an hour or two, but not if I was only popping to the shops tho'. That'd be silly.
I do like a good long winch uphill, but only after about an hour, when I've warmed up properly. Contrary to my normal tourist paced riding, I've found that lately, I've also become rather taken with fast town riding too in amongst all of the traffic (but not stupidly so - I rode mo'bike's everywhere for very many years, so I do have a solid sense of what'll work, and what end up in a wet squishy mess (to varying degrees), even allowing for the differences in braking / power).
*I don't actually eat sandwiches but you get the idea.
I reckon I'm a pretty decent rider. I've riding daily for years so fitness is good
At MTB races I usually finish in the top 20% - but I could certainly improve upon that if I bothered to train properly or actually buy a race bike. I lose most of my places on the climbs but get them back on the descents
Good technical rider - Can ride Stainburn double black well enough.
Shit at jumps - as I don't have the technique and don't wish to break owt!
Is that the tunnel under the Barbican Elfinsaftey/flatboy?
No it's the Blackfriars underpass on Upper Thames st.
i am not bad for a 21stone fat grandad, with a bad heart.
scrub that, i am shit.........
My bike flatters me...
I'm so good I actually overtook Liam Killeen some time ago. Granted he was standing still talking to someone at the time, but it still counts, doesn't it?
