Clarkson was filmed eating an Ortolan in the traditional manner. He looked suitably impressed.

I’ve often wondered since about the legendary status of this particular dish.

I have no idea. Im just yanking your tenon. 🙂

TBH the idea of crushing lil’ bones in my mouth doesnt do it for me. I have enough trouble with a McGristle burger.

clarkson ate ortolan on tv once, when doing some trip through france.
i’m not squeamish or anything about meat eating, but that just seems to be a little bit unnecessary really, you know?
and that whole being able to taste the bird’s entire life part; what a load of nonsense.

why blind them what is served by that?
TBH [ as you would expect] that sounds quite disgusting.
Is it just one of those things people do and rave about to show taste and class [bullingdon boys stylee] or is it actually nice?

Yes, but it’s better than being an culturally leaden, self interested, emotionally illiterate Tory boy buffoon.

Conservative and intellectual, unfortunately mutually exclude each other by definition.:)

i think the idea is that the blinded bird will gorge itself. Hence the alternative of feeding it in a dark box as opposed to blinding it. See, they’re all love and caring really 😉

After 75kms on the MTB in the morning I found the energy to turn out on a local “altermobile” afternoon ride, a sort of critical mass but respecting the law. I was suitably scruffy, helmetless and on a tatty touring tandem in sandals. I got chatting to an equally hippy-looky guy on a recumbant and things went fine till he starting slagging off the centre right and Sarkozy and which point I smiled and said “ah, the man I voted for”.

I find it quite frustrating that the left seem to think they have the monopoly of things ecological, enviromentally friendly, and alternative – whilst demanding economic growth and industrial jobs. A sustainable future is in the interest of all of us and it’s the countires with centre right governments rather than lefties that have promoted and financed alternative energy investments.

And the socialists are universally adored in Spain right now too…. 🙂

The left believe they have a moral authority politically which they believe translates to a moral authority in everything. The hubris in this seems to pass them by.

He wasn’t filmed eating anything, he was filmed with a cloth over his head.

He should “eat Ortolan” more often.

No, it’s just that the Right are morally bankrupt is all.

But as pointed out earlier; they’re just too blinkered and lack any self-awareness to actually see this.

This thread is win because it has given us this:

No, we started with someone attempting to have their usual dig at the left, then lacking the ability to respond to any criticism other than to resort to personal insults.

    Same old same old, then…

you were surprised that environmentalists tend to be lefties…here have another one bankers tend to be right wing
You are right the environmental movement would be crippled if it were not for centre right government. No idea what it is like on the mainland but over here every politician flouts their green credentials but does nothing much to demonstrate this.

You poor pathetic little creature. As it happens I DID start this thread in order to give away my subscription to the Guardian for June, and have done so. I jest when I dig at Toynebee/Monbiot.

You on the other hand appear to be rather too tightly wound to be allowed online. You also type like Im supposed to care what you have to say.

Here we go! 😀 Nice attempt at a sneering, condescending attitude though.

    Stoner, this is you:

‘Oh listen to me I’m very clever I read lots of books about things don’t need any real experience or knowledge because I’ve built a nice shed’.

You also type like Im supposed to care what you have to say.

You do care though. You do. Hence why you get so tightly wound that you need to resort to ad hominem attacks, rather than actually try to defend your blinkered and ignorant point of view. 😉

    Bless.

It is Stoner, there were a few out on the “altermobile” ride and handed me a leaflet for tonight’s manif in the town centre. Given that Béarnais are alergic to rain I can’t see it being much of a manif. Real Democracy Now is an exact translation of what they call themselves.

I find it all quite interesting in that the traditional political parties in many countries represent only a very small part of the political spectrum whatever their political tag. Current New Labour policies are well to the right of Edward Heath and the French socialist party is a collection of bourgeois lawyers and bankers. some socio-economic groups in society no longer have any political party they feel represents their situation or views and things like Real Democracy Now fill that vacuum.

the comparable to benefit fraud is tax evasion.

I am so glad you have pointed that out Stoner. You are of course absolutely right – the comparable to benefit fraud is indeed tax evasion.

And tax evasion costs the UK government FIFTEEN TIMES MORE than benefit fraud. I’m somewhat surprised however, that despite scrolling up and down the thread, I can’t seem to find any post which mentions that tax evasion costs the UK government FIFTEEN TIMES MORE than benefit fraud – why’s that ? 😕

Surely everyone knows that tax evasion costs the UK government FIFTEEN TIMES MORE than benefit fraud ? Presumably there are FIFTEEN TIMES MORE articles in the press concerning tax evasion than are concerning benefit fraud ? Because of course the problem of tax evaders is FIFTEEN TIMES MORE serious than the problem of benefit fraudsters.

It’s almost as if people weren’t aware that tax evasion costs the UK government FIFTEEN TIMES MORE than benefit fraud, which is quite frankly impossible in a society which has a free and fair press.

Tax evasion costs Treasury 15 times more than benefit fraud

    Quote :

“tax evasion costing the public purse over £15 billion per year and benefit fraud just over £1 billion”

Tax evasion is around 3% of total tax liabilities, while benefit fraud accounts for 0.8% of total benefit expenditure”

I could be wrong ’cause I’m crap at maths, but I work it out that suggests that 99.2% of benefit expenditure is legit. So it’s such a small problem that it hardly seems worth worrying about – they should deal with the much more serious problem of tax-dodgers I reckon.

Of course some cynics will suggest that they won’t go after tax-dodgers, which cost the UK government FIFTEEN TIMES MORE than benefit fraudsters, because they tend to be Tory-voters, but I personally, am appalled that anyone would suggest that our firm but fair government would do such a thing.

How many more times does tax evasion cost the UK than benefit fraud Ernie?

Ear Ernie; some church in Croydon has bin turned into a minster, which is just one stop from being a cathedral. Croydon could apply for city status, if that happens.

Can I just emphasis and restate that……….tax evasion isn’t as serious as benefit fraud,
it is FIFTEEN TIMES MORE serious.
