  • Are there any decent pubs in Windermere?

We are doing an Ale trail in the lakes tomorrow. Starting from Preston and heading up to Windermere then working our way back.

Now we have pubs for Staveley, Kendal, Oxenholme and Lancaster but struggling for decent pubs in Windermere. Do we need to walk down to Bowness or are there any decent places for a pint in Windermere itself?

They won’t be there. They’ll be parked halfway up the Nibthwaite descent, as always. 🙂

If time allows, how about scooting across the lake on the ferry, and strolling up to Far Sawrey for a pint at the Cuckoo Brow Inn?

Seems a shame to catch a train to the Lakes and sit in Windermere/Bowness.

Hole In’t Wall was the nicest I could find in Windermere itself.

How many pubs do you need? Don’t forget the Watermill Inn in Ings

Sun Inn, Crook. Return via the Brown Horse in Winster (suggested above)
Or, take the ferry across to the Cryer Bar on Claife?

Plenty of swanky bars and restaurants…. Far too posh for my liking. Another one for hole int wall.

We had thought about heading across the water but by time you walk down from the station and get the ferry, then walk to the pub on the other side it’s a good 2 hour round trip for a pint. Just walking and on the train so ideally close to stations. Stavely, Kendal etc are sorted for pubs it’s just the far end that I’m struggling with!

Maybe it’ll have to be a wander down to Bowness for hole in’t wall. Is it tied to Robinsons though!?

If you’re specifically wanting the town of Windermere then I’d say The Elleray.

Just stay longer in Lancaster, there’s more superb real / craft ale pubs than the size of the town suggests, each with their own character.

    Tap House for afficionados
White cross and Waterwitch for canal side duck spotting
The John O’ Gaunt has just reopened again
    The Sun
    Gillow near the castle

and more than a handful more.
