    The smaller front rings will provide more suitable the same gear inches (link) to a 26er.

    Maybe placebo effect. If you think you can go faster you will go faster. Plus they carry speed better: Last weekend I was at the back of the pack (out of deference as new boy 🙂 ) but rolled past the whole pack as we went up an incline having just blasted down a hill, in my opinion as a consequence of momentum. They were all on 26ers.
