  • are 23mm Archetype rims too narrow for 29er tyres?

I have a spare rear CX wheel (Archetype on Pro2Evo) which could move across onto the the 29er. But is it too narrow to run 2.1 29er knobblies?

I know the fashion is for wide rims which give a nice fat tyre profile but how narrow is too narrow?….

The Archetypes are 23mm wide (external) whereas, say, Stans Crest 29er are 24.5mm external, so not much in it.

Will be fine! In the old days we were running 2.1s on 17mm and less rims and nobody died

Probably not too narrow. Try it and see what the tyre profile looks like. 717s etc used to be normal for 2.1 and bigger a few years ago.
    (beaten to it!)
