I know I can get the exotic carbon ones but I was thinking cheaper. A while back on-one were doing 29er steel forks for about £50.
Not that bothered about weight that much as for the riding I'll be doing the mud will slow me down more.

Seeing as you say this, I have some (see picture below) for sale - I could do them for £30 posted? Came on a commencal and swapped for suspension immediately so only a couple of marks from storage.
440mm axle-crown, V-brake and IS disc mounts. 180Mm steerer.
I think I'll need/want 450-460mm a to c for a 456. The standard 26" ones will be a bit short.
Depends what fork you're running at the moment and if you're wanting to maintain that 'set-up'. 6-inch then a 465 a-c. 4 or 5-inch then 445 a-c will be fine.
On One cromo forks are cheap and Exotic do some ali rigid ones cheap too. Salsa Cromoto are also worth considering.
Of course my idea of the term 'cheap' may differ from yours.
I may be selling a pair of surly 29er forks - 468mm a-c . they are a few months old - very good condition
I've used a 445 ac project 2 on my 456 which worked pretty well.
Do you want to try some? I've got some OO 29er steel forks from my 2006 29er. You can borrow them for a bit if you want?
