  • Anyone using Oregon ATC 3k Action camera or similar?

I’ve got an Oregon ATC action cam and there seems to be enough wobble between the quick release mount and the camera so that filming anything vaguely bumpy is virtually unwatchable. So much so that my mates have nick named it ‘vibro cam’ 😉

Is this a common problem on these cameras? Other than numerous zip ties which is a pain, has anyone got any ideas about preventing it?

Do the Go Pro or other cameras have better mounts and give noticeably better results?

I used one of those rubber jobs from DX – One half velcros to your hat and the other to your Camera – might be worth a go before you buy new. ~(mine was a 2K )

I got so frustrated in the end with my at5k and it’s inflexibility I binned
It off and bought a go pro, was a very good decision

I used to have an ATC too, and I also got fed up of the vibration – no matter how i tried to affix it to my helmet, it always suffered terribly from vibration. I found the best way to use it was with the handlebar mount, as it was much more secure, but didn’t give as good a view point.

In the end, as I was going to use it for both MTB and skiing, I bit the bullet and bought myself a GoPro, and the mounting system is miles better. The camera screws into the mounts, and most of the fixed mounts screw onto things too – frame, seatpost etc. I can’t really comment much on the helmet mounting, as I haven’t used it much on my MTB – some footage on helmet here http://vimeo.com/19516530 – about 1m50s in.

I was looking at the Go Pro’s and wondering if they were more secure, as they still look quite high up and potential for wobble, but everyone raves about them.

There seems to be two versions? is the lower priced (960?) still worth it?

I might have one of those mounts already from an old DX torch…will have to dig it out if I csn find it.

ATCs are crap sadly, always have been- they add bells and whistles but never fix the problems. Are you sure it’s the mount vibrating? They have terrible image stability at best.

Oh, I get to post the ATC video again, i like this…

Yep I can tightly strap the mount to my helmet and there is visible play between the mount and the camera when it is clipped in.

Can you ditch the standard mount? The method I used on the motorbike wouldn’t adapt to pushbike helmet mounts but I’m invisioning blutack and rubber bands 😉

(it would work for bar mount- I broke the standard clamp so replaced it with a jubilee clip round the body of the camera, then another one round the bar, just like fitting a torch)

I could ditch the standard mount, I nearly had to when I couldn’t find it, and did that in France last year. But I don’t want to have it semi-permanently fixed to the bars / helmet. Without having a mount, its a pain to try getting the angle / position right every time you try to to fasten it down.

the cheap solution is to stick a piece of paper/card between the camera bracket and mount itself to shim out the excess space (like a beermat under a wobbly bar stool). Had the same problem with my ATC2K and whilst it might never be as good as a go pro it solves the vibration problem.
