  • Anyone used NoTubes kits on non UST rims?

I'd like to make my xc717 rims so I can run them tubeless but I don't totally understand whether This would work ok? as it looks a better option than buying new rims and wheel build. thanks for the help

certainly would work. i preferred not to get shafted by the extortionate cost of rim strips tho and went 'ghetto'. couple of schwalbe 20" inner tubes split in half, and the sealant, and youre sorted 🙂

Yes Stans will work. I've used them on 321 rims.

Google 'Ghetto tubeless' and you'll find 'how to' guides for the system decribed above.

The only advantage that proper rim strips have over a ghetto set up is when you swap tyres. Not sure how 'reusable' the ghetto set up is.

that kit would work. I have used it on my bontrager non ust rims and they are holding up fine.

the kits are designed for non-UST rims, as UST rims are already sealed

Yes, working well with 717's here. Put a couple of wraps of cheapy insulation tape between the yellow tape and the rim strip – makes the bead fit tighter and inflation easier. Check out JRA for info on compatible non-UST tyres. Maxxis work well and Bontrager & Specialised 2Bliss.

I've changed tyres (SM8 to MudX, for the winter and all) and kept the same BMX tube rim strip. That said I didn't trim the tube – if I had it might have been more difficult.

Using a 20in tube/ dedicated rim strip is not absolutely necessary. I have been riding "converted" Mavic crossride's for a couple of years now.
I built up the hollow area in the rim with some draught excluder sponge tape bought from a glazier for 40p per metre. This layer helps with the initial sealing of the tyre on the bead. I then sealed the bed of the rim with insulation tape, overlapping from one side to the other as the tape is a bit narrow. I scavenged the valves out of some old tubes. Just cut a disc of rubber about the size of a 5p around the stem and push it through the tape. The system works a treat and is reuseable if you need to swap tyres.

I find the proper Notubes strips work well but ghetto doesn't unless you use over 35psi. With less the air burps out when you start riding hard.

they worked fine for me. I found the whole thing a faff until I invested in a cheap small compressor though. There are other ways to get them to seat but it's much easier with a compressor. I got one for about £55 from screwfix, will probably pay for itself with canisters saved fairly quickly

I just use one to get the tyre sealed (usually not a full one) and then use a track pump to get it hard. (oo-er).

Those little cartridges get really cold, watch your fingers!

    Cheers, al.
