My new roadbike just came with one. Any reason why I need to keep it on, It looks rubbish. Don’t want to stick the chain into my expensive spokes however!

I don’t have such an item on any of my mountain bikes

just set your limiter screw properly and you shouldnt have any issues

I don’t install them, but I’d not bother removing them. Limit screws are all well and good untill a rock/mud/stick pushes your mech into the spokes. Bit surplus on a road bike mind you.

When building wheels I put the drive side pushing spokes on the outside so the chain gets lifted out under tension rather than dragged further in.

    Seriously?

    Unnecessary weight. Remove!
