After catching some of a random programme last night seemed to be extolling the virutes of reindeers meat. Looks a bit like venison, very dark meat.

    Anyone tried it?

Yes, in Stavanger a few years ago and it was very nice indeed. Very juicy and tender.

Will leave a couple of traps out tonight then. Would be something different for Christmas Day lunch.

Yes, like very good venison. The view was good from the hotel restaurant too. And all on expenses too, happy days!

Maybe it’s a hangover from my working away from home days – but I love eating out on my own.

Had it exactly 2 years ago today. Did feel a bit guilty tbh. Was lovely though.

Don’t take your kids to Oxford Covered Market. Raindeer bodies with the fur on and the heads and tails hacked off. Pretty obvious what they were.
I must emphasise this was a butcher, not some random act of Santacide.

Oh, well tasty too. An ex-gf’s dad was a reindeer farmer/herder in the Finmark. Chernobyl put paid to that.

Smoked reindeer wraps, a highlight of a fairly boring conference in Stockholm a few years ago and still remembered fondly.

Have we done the weird meat thread as a separate thing?

    Springbok is a gamey venison
    Antelope a bit tougher
Alligator and Croc both like a slightly fishy pork ( may be just to my imagination)
Bison/buffalo almost as good as reindeer, a slightly richer beef
Tar – not dissimilar to goat not unsurprisingly
    Ostrich rich pheasant/chicken
    Zebra – not unlike beef
Mutton bird – the clue is in the name

Got the unusual animal thing out of the system now and having beef for xmas dinner.

I love venison and finally managed to get 8 reindeer legs for £50.
Do you think that’s too dear?

Elk and reindeer at a Swedish wedding. V tasty!
Also had some ridiculously expensive berries in the sweet that are picked off a mountain side or something. Embarrassed to not remember 😳

Yes, had both reindeer stew and casserole. Was in Finland, it’s a common dish in all the restaurants. It was really nice, tender and full of flavour.

    Wrightyson – cloudberries.

I’ve had reindeer. It ttastes like venison of course, because it IS venison. But milder and more beefy than the usual UK wild venison. The stuff for the table is probably farmed though so that might be it.

Also had elk aka moose, nice and gentle, tasty. Smoked reindeer also good.
