MOT of death for the Shogun this morning, so I'm looking for a biggish old 4x4, something capable of towing 2 1/2 tonnes.
Anyone know of any for sale?

2.5t put you into the big 4x4's as you say.
Personally, I'm a land rover fan - have been for years.
Are the 100% reliable? No, but if you keep on top of them, they are.
Do they rust? Yes
Are they easy enough to work on? Yes - big mechano sets really
Are parts easy to get? Very - both new and second hand
whats your budget?
I've always rated the Td5 discovery as being a good buy personally.
Nissan Patrol Y60 4.2 diesel manual - amazing car. Guard with your life though! Mine got stolen - apparently this happens a lot with older 4x4s as they are easy to steal. Seems they get sent to Eastern Europe and Africa. Look on Ebay, there are often a few on there.

Yep
End of an era

Scary if bits go wrong though? (Question based on some motoring reading rather than firsthand exp)

It hugely depends on whether you're prepared to do the work yourself or pay someone else.
Land Rovers fall into 2 categories of running costs imho.
Very Expensive if you get a dealer / garage to repair.
Quite reasonable if you do the work yourself.
The parts are often physically bigger, but I wouldn't say that they have been significantly more expensive than similar parts for other cars. I've also not managed to not be able to get a part for any land rover i've had. For the smaller parts, the main dealer costs aren't actually all that bad.
there is also a huge knowledge base for DIY in land rovers, so forums are plentiful, and most work has already been done by others, talked about and illustrated guides posted up.

'Pay someone else' is not an expression I use often. I 've had a IIA and a Discovery in the past. I'm happy to roll my sleves up.
