So, my dad is getting on and has stopped driving. He has an oldish (9yr) but pretty mint, low mileage Merc with a fairly valuable plate (3 letters and 1) that he wants to sell.

Is it best to retain the plate and sell the two separately or will he get a similar amount if sells them together? Is it even possible to retain a plate anymore? Where should he advertise to get the best price for the plate?

    Cheers

Phone the DVLA they are very good with help and advice (seriously)

Yes you can retain the plate.
Yes they will be worth more separately.

And it’s really simple to do, you just need to fill out the right forms and send them off.

    (And pay the fee obviously)

Yep retain, you’ll have to put on a retention certificate, which will cost IIRC £80 transfer fee and £25 for the cert. which will have to be renewed every 12 months.
