I’ve noticed that since I became a dad stories like this really break my heart. Before it would have just been tragic. Now it makes me feel physically sick.

Current (reasonable I suppose) theory is that mum came round after a while and has no idea that the little girl rang 999. If she turns on the news she may realise what’s going on.

It’s weird, I know Leeds is a big place but you’d have thought that with Council Tax records, electoral lists, benefit records etc it can’t be that hard to track someone if you know their name and a partial address. But then, I suppose they’re doing all they can.

Anyway, let’s hope this turns out well.

odd the emergency services can’t trace the call, was my other thought.

It was from a mobile apparently. Police chappy said the increase in calls from mobiles and therefore not traceable geographically is a growing problem

Mum probably just OD’d. She’ll come round.

If she’d made the call from a mobile, presumably the emergency services can call it back. Therefore if mum had passed out and then recovered she would have answered the phone. If they have a record of her number, surely which ever network she is with could trace it. I am in the process of moving all our mobile handsets from multiple providers and when I rang one up with a query they were *very* quick to point out that the number wasn’t one of theirs.

Oh and what geetee1972 said +1.

True, unless she hasn’t recovered of course 🙁

I’m not sure how easy this is in the real, not CSI, world. I suppose they may be able to tell which cell the call was made from, which might narrow the search. And I’m sure it’s a line of inquiry that’s being followed up.

If it’s a payg though then there might not be any record of the owner.

    ETA; C&P from mumsnet;

From west Yorkshire police fb page:

Detectives investigating a 999 call to the ambulance service which claimed to be a three-year-old girl reporting her mum collapsed at home have now established the call was a hoax.

Unusually the number that made the call was not identifiable and could not initially be traced. Investigations subsequently identified a mobile phone number and traced it to Bridlington.

Two ten-year-old girls living there were identified and have been spoken to by officers this afternoon.

Officers are now liaising with the girls’ parents and partner agencies to take appropriate action.

Detective Chief Inspector Lisa Griffin, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “We are pleased that our investigation has shown that we don’t have a vulnerable little girl out there with her mum collapsed beside her, although it is obviously incredibly frustrating that this has turned out to be a hoax

“We are very grateful to the public and the media for all the support they have given us in appealing for information over this incident. We treated the call as genuine on the basis of what was said what could be established in the initial stages of the investigation. Our priority is always to help the public and protect life as was our overriding focus in this investigation.

“This incident again highlights how misuse of the 999 system can cause significant unnecessary work for the emergency services who have limited resources to deal with genuine calls for help from members of the public. We hope it will help to remind people of the serious consequences of misusing the 999 system.”

IHN, I was assuming that the phone would be registered to her however Mrs Flash just drove a truck through that theory with a point well made above.

Hope it all works out well…

Well, that worked out well for the, thankfully, fictional three year old

Maybe not for the two ten-year old girls though. I foresee a MASSIVE bollocking…

Yes stop all benefits then hopefully we’ll get some newcomers to the UK porn scene which has been getting a bit stale of late.
