  • Anyone from Bergen or Stavanger and can give me some riding advice?

I’m looking to get myself a van and head towards the west coast of Norway (currently live in Sweden) and do a load of riding around there during the summer. I am currently researching where there are rideable trails, given that so much of it is well steep, scouring maps and google photos etc.

Has anyone got any advice or info on riding near the two cities; locations, mountains, gpx files, photos or videos of good riding spots etc? I am particularly interested in the areas around Stavanger and Bergen (or a couple of hours away).

Also interested in any touristy, scenic spots I should go visit… waterfalls, big cliffs, viewpoints, nice villages etc…

    What you got?

Not ridden out there yet but been to Hardangerfjord area about a couple of hours out from Bergen a couple of times, going back out there in May again as the flights are so cheap at the moment. Its a stunning area plenty to see if you like waterfalls, mountains and fjords.

Not seen many people riding mountain bikes but fair amount of roadies about. I’ve seen tyre tracks on a few trails but not seen anyone actually riding. I’m trying to borrow a bike off the guy we’ve rented from as he’s a mountain biker.

Found this when looking previously that looked good.

Absolutely no help but there was a shop in Bergen when I was there quite few years ago with plenty of MTB’s in the window. You’d think with the terrain and generally outdoorsy lifestyle there’s bound to be plenty of nice places to ride.

In a similar useless and anecdotal way; I took a 10 days camper van explore around Fjordland with the bikes on the back around 2000 ish. We weren’t brilliantly prepared with maps or any kind of plan of where to look but we found very little.
It all seemed either, “down here”, snaking road with a fjord to one side and cliff face on the other or “up there”….in the clouds….and we can’t see the top…how do we get up there?
I think we found some dirt roads to explore or some crazy hike a bike stuff but nothing in between.

    Told you it was useless.

    Try looking on Strava?
Bergen has a couple of DH tracks.
You could head up to Voss as well.
Sogndal might be your best bet for natural stuff.

It’s been almost 15 years since I lived in Stavanger but at the time there wasn’t a great deal of riding. At the time you could ride on any footpaths but they weren’t really built / trodden in with flow in mind. Often there would be a short scramble up rock slabs or other feature.

Not much help again I know but the hiking / climbing was fantastic.

I’ve been in Stavanger for a few years but not found any offroad riding worth talking about yet, I’ve heard about some trails but it’s not the sort of proper mountain adventures like youd get in wales, the peaks, lakes or Scotland. The terrain around here tends to be either super steep or flattish gravel tracks, and not much in between. If you’re in to it the road riding is great though if you head to the hills in the southeast and east (especially Lysefjord area, or Suleskard from the Sirdal valley), or a bit further south along the coast around places like Jossingfjord. It is hilly though! It’s much flatter along the coast immediately south of stavanger Loads of hiking close to here, you don’t need to join the crowds at the popular spots of Preikestolen or Kjerag boulder if that’s not your sort of thing, again the Sirdal area or hikes from Hunnedalen valley has loads to do, about 2 hours from Stavanger. Also some nice, shortish easy hikes just across the fjord from Stavanger you can get to in half an hour. It’s in Norwegian but you should try http://www.ut.no and search for hiking or cycling routes and cabins. Hope that helps.

Toured by bike a couple of years ago on and off road. Cycled Bergen to Voss mostly on road. Caught the train onto the Hardanger plateau. Cycled the length of the Rellervegan (wild camped overnight) and down to Flam which ends with some great hairpins. Sea Kayaked in Flam. Went to see the nearby Stadkirche (think spooky looking wooden church made of wood soaked in tar). Caught the boat from Flam back to Bergen. Loved it. Got very wet. Great camp sites. Really helpful bike shops and outdoor gear shops in Bergen.
