  • Anyone ever rooted an Android phone?

I’m sick of the stupid thing misbehaving. It slows right down to the point a key entry will take a second to appear on screen. It point blank refused to pick up a signal for 6 hours. This afternoon it’s refusing to send text messages.

I think an OS re-install will let it know I’m in charge again. So, how to?

I had Android 1.6 on my Xperia and would have rooted that if they hadn’t released 2.1. Which is 10x better I now get 3 days battery life where as before I struggled to get a day.

So may be worth checking you have the latest update for your phone before resorting to a custom rom which may have more issues than your vanilla version.

If it was fine and is now not, a reset and update to the latest version may be more appropriate than rooting.

It’s a Legend. It was fine on 2.1 but since it’s been updated to 2.2 it’s been flakier. Battery is rubbish these days too.

Googling about it seems a Legend might be quite tricky – I need 2 SD cards apparently.

Is there any ‘housekeeping’ that can be done before resorting to a root?

I have a legend on 2.2 and find it’s very stable.

I use Task Manager 5.7 if anything mis-behaves.
Use the OS tools to manage connectivity to maintain you battery life.
And if you’re in a flaky 3G reception use the 2G-3G switch to shortcut to the band settings.

got a desire and have rooted it, fairly straight forward.
You dont really need 2 sd cards you can use the one you have got, just need to back it up before you make it a Goldcard.

One thing you could try is not using all the HTC sense stuff they load the phone with, there are pleanty more launchers and widgets out there that do the same thing as sense and dont take up as much resources.

A good place to start is http://www.xda-developers.com
Or for rooting your phone try this link

FYI I’m running my desire on a version of gingerbread (android 2.3) and it is blisteringly quick.

Cheers Stoner – can you explain the last two points a little further?

I’ve only got WiFi on when I need to use it (rarely), toggled through the shortcuts widget that’s got Bluetooth, GPS, brightness etc on it. Where’s the 2G/3G switch? In settings?

No, but I had sex in a phone box once. Does that count?

    Add> Widget> Power Control
Use it to turn your wifi, GPS and screen brightness on only when you need it

    aha already using it.

sorry, second one is actually an app: “2G-3G OnOff”

theres also a switch to turn mobile data off too, stops it going off and downloading stuff, running the 3G transmitter hard.

Mail program was downloading every 15 minutes – I don’t need that. I think I might backup, factory reset and then build back up not just installing any nonsense that I happen to come across.

No need to do any complicated gold card stuff.

Jusy do the unrevoked method. Very simple plug and run process.

Wont work for me as i rooted it once already though.

Did you do a factory reset afterwards?

    No – should I have?

It’s generally advised in order to, well, prevent the sort of issues you’re seeing. It’ll also rule out an errant app as a cause.

    Backup your data first, mind.
