If so, did you take it home on your car?
We can’t have it delivered because we’re both out all day, so I wanted to pick it up in my van. It’s only a combi van (Peugeot Partner) so I was hoping the wardrobe would come in a few boxes and I could put the smaller ones in the van and the larger ones on the roof rack? I’m hoping the large ones don’t weigh a ton of I’ll never get them up there?

I bought a hemnes wardrobe it needed 2 of us to put it on the roof, weighs a ton. Also took me half a day to assemble. Since then i ve always bought on gummy as its already assembled and half price. Loads listed in london if thats where you are.

Yep, but in my mondeo estate, the boot doesn’t obey conventional laws of physics- there’s room in there for a mondeo.

Managed it in a breadvan Honda Civic, no bother.

Bit easier to leave it hanging out the tailgate of a car though, physics ensur its always pulling into the car at an angle, not sure about a slippy flat floor.

The big ones are proper heavy, wouldn’t want to fit it on my roof on my own

Don’t (like we did) build it laying down then discover you can’t rotate it to horizontal without putting a hole in the ceiling!

The lower hight PAX fit in our Peugeot Partner but only by folding the front seat forwards. So if you have a bulkhead, it might not fit.
The long boxes are the main casing one (two people easy lift so must be less than 40kg) and the doors. Everything else is small.

If you’ve got for the tall version, you may have to chuck the long one on the roof. I’d risk 2 units, but no more. (i’m not an automotive roof rack specialist etc).

More like 100kg on good ones I think. Although you could comfortably have more if you’re careful (I’ve had a whole rotten shed on my old car!)

But the cupboards don’t weigh more than 40kg at most I’d say, maybe less. It’s just bulky to put my on the roof on your own

Yes, check this. The big ones we bought for our bedroom came within a couple of millimetres of the ceiling when I flipped it up, was cutting it fine!

May be more on vans but BMW limit to 75kg on their railed estates and I see Thule and Halfords have an across the board 75kg weight limit on pair of bars with their fitting systems.

cant say i’ve put an flat pack wardrobe in but i have had a Malm 6 drawer chest in the back of my c-max. the drawer is 1.6m wide so with the packaging it was probably about 1.8m in length…and had the 6 drawer version and a few other bits in there. so i only just about got the whole lot in
anyone who has a c-max and is familiar with how the rear seats fold down will know how much fun i had getting everything in

waswas – are you 100% sure? It was 100kg on my E61 5 series (I’m pretty sure it was anyway…).

I would conservatively estimate 250kg on the roof when the shed was up on top on the way to the tip. Ratcheted it down, then drove very slowly!

Top tip – Build the Pax wardrobe in the room you are installing it. Don’t ask me how I know this…..

Ours were second hand – its amazing how well they come apart, and it was £750 for new or £100 of gumtree and £100 of new internal fittings to get it ‘just so’…

There is some deep amusement to be had watching folk at Ikea try to load things in. Two weeks ago there was family of 4 trying to get a made up bed base into back of Kuga. The look on her face when he asked the kids to get out, that got worse when he shuffled driver and passenger seat right up against dashboard was only topped a minute later when he tried to shut the boot and discovered it was still 3″ too long… 😆 😆 😆 Cue argument about who was getting the bus vs hiring a van back to somewhere in Argyll…

Meanwhile smug-pants_oab strolled up to the mighty Galaxy, flipped one seat and inserted a full length wardrobe, drawers and more inside, followed by all five climbing in and drawing away while the Kuga family were still arguing… 😀

And roof bars – Thule Aero are usually 60kg, heavy duty upt0 100kg, but more importantly is the roof loading. Our Galaxy is 80kg according to manual, 75kg online. Two open boats with bars = exactly 79.8kg…

Ikea are very clever, they know most of their customers will take it home on their own so they try to keep things real-world.

as a guide the packaging will never be more than a few inches longer that the item is tall.

I once had 5 railway sleepers on a roofrack atop my vw polo.

Just been in the garage and you’re right for the OEM BMW bars. 🙂

Assuming you don’t take a passenger you should get everything inside.

I’ve had eight 2400 x 600 t&g floorboards in a Partner Teepee by stacking them on the folded front passenger seat.

Any wider though and you’ll struggle to get 1st / 2nd gear.
