Any clues on recovery time? Hospital was utterly useless in giving any idea.

    Nope, T6 & T7 though.

It depends on the fracture. Stable compaction type fracture in my case and really wasn’t too long. Back on bike for gentle rides one and a half months later (maybe a little before I was signed off and good to go 😉 ). Was up and walking within a week and encouraged to walk.

If there’s anything at risk of nerve damage and you’re in a brace (guess neck brace in this case), then strictly do as instructed.

nope but did a c3 and c4 and spent four months in a hard collar and four months in a soft collar . was able to train after the hard collar was removed . but no cycling or contact sports for nearly a year . on the upside i broke it as a prop and came back as a lightweight flanker .

1/11/2013. T5, 6 and 7 burst fractured when my head argued with the ground at the bottom of a bomb hole on Leith Hill. Given the choice of an external brace and ending up as a hunchback or an internal brace and risking nerve damage.

Opted to roll the dice and went for the internal and guess what? Currently on medication so I can piss. More procedures to follow.

I was in recovery at home for a couple of months and then eased myself back on to biking commute a month later. Painkillers tailed off after six months.

p.s. in A&E/ICU or wherever after the smash, you won’t get anything useful from them. You’re lucky if you even see a doctor other than eventually to come round and say you can go.

Fracture clinic will give you more advice.

Mrs B has seriously damaged 4 and 5 in a wakeboard whiplash accident about 5 years ago. Surgery carries a 30% change of paralysis 😯

She has had a number of special injections under x-ray (max 3 per year?), she can now do easy sports red/blue skiing, easy wakeboard (no jumping), I think mtb is too risky as a new sport for her and otb could but her in a wheelchair. She wears a neck brace on long car journeys

It depends very much on exact injury

    Good luck

Thanks everyone. Almost wished I hadn’t posted seeing the above. Heal well, all of you and sorry to hear of your pain.

Mine was a bombhole argument last weekend at Black Park. Too keen to get back in the saddle after cancer treatment, bang in the first couple of minutes. Should have dropped in more gently I suppose.

As above, a&e were pretty useless, despite having walked in a day after the crash I ended up fully immobilised staring at the ceiling being bumped in a corridor for 12 hours. Got no sense out of the doctors who didn’t really deign to speak to me hence my question. Sent home with a bloody great collar, a headache and no information so I want to know what to expect.

Have now booked a private specialist as I don’t want long term problems, but he needs my scans and reports, which hospital now say could take weeks to obtain – aaaaaaarrrgghhhhhh!!

Cheers and best wishes to all.

Did C5 about 20 years ago now very minor hairline fracture, hard collar for 1 month then soft collar for 1 after that.back on bike after that.
Cause missing a sleeper bridge over a stream/bog n resultant over the bars n landing flat on back in the glop, looking up at my mates, looking down n saying “is he alive” ? as i think i was out for a moment or two.

Classic statement from doc at x ray was “if it had been a hard surface you’d be dead”

But now 20 years on get issues with stiff neck n pressure going down spine n causing problems ,so see a osteopath periodically to loosen it all up.

Ps you may find quicker n cheaper to get private scan done as they charge for notes etc to private non NHS providers.
As we found to our cost NHS don’t talk to HSE here in Ireland ,cost us £50.00 for each set of doctors files, hospital notes etc.

Depends on the nature of the fracture, I did my c6 in a car crash years ago, but it was only the knobby bit on the back of the vertebrae that broke, was pretty much painless, month off work in a soft collar.

I crushed my C7,it took months to heal!

I had no feeling down the right side of my body for 6 months and still now 20 years later am weaker on the right compared to the left. Everyone is different tho.

Having recently fractured my c6 I’d say it depends entirely on what you have actually done. (Sorry haven’t read the whole thread).

But for ref I fractured my c6 and snapped a piece of bone off that has lodged itself in the nerve canal for the right hand side of my body. I also pushed my c6 & c5 out alignment. I was in a hard collar for three months and came out of it in December / Jan. I’ve been advised that I could have surgery to sort out the clicking / pain however I was told there is a 1 in 1000 chance I’ll walk in but not out. I’ve started doing light exercise although that largely because my legs still knackered and I still get pain doing certain things, looking down at an iPad can be hell! I’ve been to,d I need to be careful when / if I return to climbing riding as a large impact could have serious consequences.

Rest up and once out of the collar try to get a decent physio who specialises in neurology and neck injuries as you’ll get a much better response to ensuring you build up the strength etc.

Thanks again all. Am remarkably mobile already (aside from the collar) – went for a walk yesterday which helped loosen things. Every now and then there is a sickening crunch which then gives me nerve gyp down the right arm, but the headache is starting to pass off. Back to work Tuesday, no choice on that, I didn’t go in at all last week but worked from home (a few slightly weird concussion emails!).

Thanks for your experiences. It’s the not knowing that doesn’t help.
