my old pub(ex mountain) bike has elastomer forks and after quite a long layoff it’s turned into a lowrider as the elastomers have given up the ghost

Spares aren’t available (well except at silly money via US, and it’s an 1″ headset etc etc), so I’m hoping to repair. On t’internet the suggestion was to find some suitable 40A durometer pu rod and drill to suit the elastomer skewers. I wasn’t able to find this (in viable quantities or price ) so I tried an initial bodge (suggested on here) of plastic wine corks – this failed as they were too large in diameter and not easy to narrow down.

I’ve now found – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Move-Moving-TM-Absorber-Polyurethane/dp/B00XKYU9LS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1448798764&sr=8-2&keywords=polyurethane+rod+18mm – which is right on the bodge money (£6) but gives no idea of hardness.

I can get 90 durometer rod but suspect it will be like rock and it’s over 30 quid

so just wondering if anybody knew the whereabouts of some 16mm ish round PU rod with a lowish durometer at pub bike fixing prices

How long is the steerer? I may have a set of forks you can have for postage.

I’m not sure you’ll find 40 hardness as “rod” – it’s pretty soft, and would be “interesting” to machine (maybe freeze it?).

You can get castable urethane for 40A hardness:

(£20ish for 0.9kg, maybe less if you shop around.)

Have you tried one of the old rockshox service centres (lots of shops had service kits during the mag/ judy period)

Try Coombes cycles in Hereford Mark used to service 20,21s and jury’s and may have some spares

Several years ago I replaced some elastomers with springs. There was a site in America that specialised in alternative springs but I would not be able to remember the name!

I have a bike with an old RockShox Quadra 21R, and the elastomers had fossilized. I looked for material, and found it at McMaster-Carr but didn’t have any idea which durometer to get. And it wasn’t cheap, either. Especially if I bought the wrong thing.

So I just bought them from http://suspensionforkparts.net/ Not cheap ($60 IIRC), but worked perfectly the first time. They also include new lube to use with the elastomers. I’d buy again if in a similar situation.

There is more in depth discussion on the ProFlex forum at http://idriders.com/proflex/smf/index.php but it doesn’t seem like you want to go to that level.

Edit – You could also, try Retrobike
