Looking to buy my first, what model is a good place to start. I.e. baritone/soprano & any recommendations as to a specific instrument to try out

I would say stick to soprano ukeleles to start and you can’t really go wrong with a Makala, Lanikai or Kala. These can vary in price greatly but are all well thought of makes.

The Makala Dolphin is a well thought of budget uke and can be yours for around £30.

I’ve got a couple of mahalo’s, once you put some decent strings on, they sound great.

I’m very tempted by one of these:

Same size as a regular uke, but six stringed, with standard guitar tuning and chords. Can’t go wrong with Yamaha, and not expensive, either.

Was watching a border Morris team over the weekend, and one of the musicians was playing a bass uke, plugged into an battery-powered amp on a little trolley. Amazing deep bass, couldn’t believe the sound from it; it did cost him £400, though!

isto is writing wise words, get that Makala. Though I can second the notion that a Mahalo with decent strings upgrade makes a surprisingly good sound, that’s what I use for my ‘end of the sofa’ uke. But the Makala Dolphin already has that bit done for you.

http://www.ukulelehunt.com is my favourite uke site for getting to know things, check it out too.

Like the look of those Guitarleles, I think they’re tuned in A though, aren’t they?

I tried several ukes including most sizes. Soprano was ok but found a concert was a little easier to play with big hands. The tenor felt a bit big, not quite uke enough cause of its size. I very nearly got a long neck soprano but really liked the concert so got that. Mine is a kala. Try an find a local music shop that stocks em and go have a look. Most guitar shops round here have a surprisingly good range of ukes.

Think I’ve got a soprano Kala – I like it. Quite like it being 4 string and different tuning etc to a guitar personally.

It’s so light and portable – great for camping 🙂

A guitalele is the size of a ukulele, and is commonly played like a guitar transposed up to “A” (that is, up a 4th, or like a guitar with a capo on the fifth fret). This gives it tuning of ADGCEA, with the top four strings tuned like a low G ukulele.[3] This is the same as the tuning of a requinto guitar, although the latter are typically larger than a guitalele.

    Several guitar and ukulele manufacturers market guitaleles, including Yamaha Corporation’s GL-1 Guitalele,[4][5] Cordoba’s Guilele,[6] Koaloha’s D-VI 6-string tenor ukulele,[7] Mele’s Guitarlele,[8] Kanilea’s GL6 Guitarlele,[9] Luna’s 6-string baritone ukulele,[10] and the Gretsch guitar-ukelele.[11]
