rhythmbox isn’t a ripper, it’s a player. i use grip for ripping media

Rhythmbox rips CD and DVDs to its library.

It is a point though that you only have to copy media files into the folder where the Rhythmbox library is stored for it to appear. So you’re not tied into the built in ripper.

I suspect Rhythmbox doesn’t rip in mp3 format because mp3 is a patented format and as such is not easy to include in free open source software.

In Ubuntu 10.10 the default ripper is Asunder IIRC. Works a treat too.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I’ve just tried to give asunder a try but apparently ‘lame is not found in my path’ and I need it to encode in mp3 format.

    Any ideas?

I’ve used Sound Juicer for the last couple of years and find it works really well. You should be able to change to mp3 in the preferences.

do you have lame installed? Probably not by default

    type

    sudo apt-get install lame

or you will be able to find it in synaptic.

Then restart you ripper program and try again or do something like

for i in *.wav; do lame “$i” “${i%wav}.mp3”; done

    on the command line
