First off I know nothing about stamp collecting; however, I have inherited my great-grand fathers stamp collection that dates back to the mid 1800’s; it’s a mad collection of stamps from all over the world, some of which are from counties that don’t exist anymore so it’s a great bit of history.

So where the hell do I start; Google is throwing back a lot of information and it would be great to speak to a specialist but who’s best to speak to, a local enthusiast or someone like Stanley gibbons?
Not even tempted to sell the collection but want to do it some justice rather than relegate it to dark draw to be forgotten again.

    Contact Stanley Gibbons
My father was an avid stamp collector and was always contacting them for advice. I inherited his collection when he passed away.
If they can’t help they can probably put you in touch with a club or person who can

I inherited some stamps as well a couple of years ago.

I bought from ebay a set of CD’s with Scott’s standard postage stamp catalogues on. They cost me a tenner (were copies).

I then slowly worked my way through the stamps identifying each one. Some are quite tricky as you have to check the water marks and perforations to truly identify them.

I used a forum (I think it was stampcircuit.com) for any stamps I got really stuck on (or were not in the catalogues). They were a helpful bunch. It is strangely addictive (I am ashamed to say!).

    It is quite geographically educational!
