do you run shimano rear mech or sram?

I’d been led to believe that shimano rear mechs didnt shift well on a bike with a horst link (either cos of actuation ratios or cos the mech catches on the pivot)

as my sram mech is now knacked and the general consensus is that sram mechs are shit, do I just bite the bullet and go 1×10 with a zee mech / shifter / new cassette (and mebbe new wheel, cos i think the bearings are phucked)

or can i bodge it in the meantime with a 9sp shitmano mech?

    cheers for earlier replies, btw

In my experience shimano mechs will bounce on the horst pivot, but SRAM mechs don’t.

However, the newer Shimano clutch ones solve this issue, I believe…

aye – thats what I thought too

cant go clutch mech til I go ten speed…but dont want to have to go 10 speed just yet

just need a cheap rear mech that will work on an enduro til i can afford to go 10 speed

Always had Horst – Always had Shimano.
What problem are you talking about? Never noticed anything?

I always thought what people say is mostly shite anyway and run what you want. Tried some new slx 10 speeds and they were rubbish.

the problem is meant to be the shimano rear mech continually hitting the horst link

I read you can go Shimano 10 speed rear mech if you use a 9 speed SRAM shifter or do a mod to the 10 speed mech adding a washer to change the ratio. Search on here as the thread was on Pink bike linked from here.

I’ve got a non clutched 10s mech on my Pitch. Never noticed any problems with it. But it is 1×10 so maybe the chain’s tighter.

I’ve got a shimano mech on my old enduro (it came from specialised with a shimano mech) , and its fine, I’ve not noticed any problem at all. In fact I’ve never heard of this supposed incompatability.

Old style mechs bounce off the Horst on my 06 Enduro but Shadow mechs are fine. I would rather be annoyed by noise from the old style mech than run sram gears again.

I’m planning on going 10spd Zee and as the mech is shadow+ I don’t expect any problem at all.

I’d rather run sram gears than the heap of crap shimano gears

Never had a problem with Shimano gears mike but had nothing but problems with my Sram gears on my old Pitch. Even upto the point of having to wee on the mech in the snow so it would move. I have never had a shimano mech freeze despite having run them for all but 1 of my mountain biking winters.

It isn’t an incompatability as such. They work together fine.

The issue is that non-clutch shimano mechs move a lot around the pivot point, and are able to move so much that they will hit the dropout/pivot/chainstay.

You may not notice yourself, but a couple of guys I ride with sound like typewriters going down the trail from mech hitting pivot.

I’ve got on much better with Shimano XT rear mech on my Pitch than with the SRAM X9 I had before.

    stuff and nonsense

I had nothing but faultless shifting with my XO setup Horst linked Nicolai Helius FR.
