Any reccomendations for video conversion software?

I have some mp4 files I want to convert on to DVD PAL (to play on normal DVD players)

I downloaded AVA but after a lengthy install they need a key!!!

So any decent free software on the net?

Mac or PC based?

If mac based, MPEG streamclip is good

I though "everybody" used handbrake

(I've never converted a vid in my life though)

Mpeg streamclip for pretty much any format conversion here also. MAC or pc versions.
