Is it legal to disconnect a waste pipe (having bathroom redone)and use a plastic bag to cover up the end?

The bag has just been pushed in the open pipe and folded over the ends. Its in a rented domestic house and has now been like this for 3 weeks and the ground floor stinks!

As a temporary measure I would say it is fine, but they should be properly disconnected if to be used no longer.

(Not a plumber or anything, just seems common sense).

not sure about the legality of it but common practice. usually a bag over the end and taped on though. should stop the smell.

It is to be reconnected (shoudl have been done by now). No tape used – will do that myself when I get home.

usually I would plug the waste with a proper bung

or tape some plastic over with some gaffer tape to make an airtight seal.

Stoner – used one of those myself when removing an outside loo – then concreted over the top too.

Back to the OP though – we had lots of work done last year and they did similar (sorry I didn't read your post properly) but it was outside (the aforementioned outside loo and pipe work was removed and new added).
